Yeah, I don’t think that’s avoidable. A “computer” used to be a job. Then came what was still referred to as “AI” in the 1950s and obsoleted that job. People who did computing ended up adopting those electronic computers to aid them while they went on to think about more complex things.
Similarly, digital artists will have to adapt. Some might still be able to make a living with truly custom art, where they can e.g. show the whole process in livestreams. But others will routinely use these AI images as their canvas, to which they only make tweaks.
Art already went through something similar as well when photography was invented. Impressionism was largely born as a response to photography being able to quickly capture realistic images. I think we’ll likely see art going in new directions with AI as well. I also agree with the idea that AI generation can be viewed as a new medium. There is still a process of selection and curation done by the artist who has the vision of what the end result should be. The AI simply automates the mechanical skill of being able to express the idea.
That’s a pretty fine piece of art after all
Marxists should stand beside the workers that will be displaced by this. The technology would be great in a system that understands how to protect people, reskill them, change industry, etc etc. But in the system we have it will harm these workers and the ““leftists”” I’ve seen refusing to stand by them in that and lauding the technology clearly do not have workers at heart. They enjoy their new toy too much.
