I must have used PayPal at most three times in the last 10 years. What is the use case making it so irreplaceable? I transfer with my bank.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to self-host a Prosody XMPP server on Bazzite with Podman for MovimEnglish
2·14 days agoSetting up an xmpp server is not a good entrypoint in the self-hosting space. It is quite hard to build. It is a complex system made of different components in order to achieve what you expect from it. I strongly recommend using existing servers. If you want to tinker, find something else (a samba share and a vpn on bare metal is a good starting point in order to learn).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Do you prefer XMPP or Matrix powered apps as a discord alternative?
6·15 days agoI also prefer xmpp, which I find more stable and easier to set up and maintain.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•If you are not in a tech field, what got you into self-hosting?English
2·24 days agoI couldn’t think about leaving my personal data to the Big Tech…
I’d add Crowdsec
I don’t understand what you are saying. I use the app on GrapheneOS with no problem. It is just an usual banking app. Not better not worse.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•US tech firm Palantir extends deal with French intelligence agency
13·3 months agoWhat strikes me is not the news. Palantir partners with many governments. What strikes me is the absence of this article in the French edition.
I wouldn’t recommend network apps to a complete beginner. They might loose their network for a while and get afraid of tinkering. My 2p

GrapheneOS@lemmy.world•I am considering moving to grapheneOS and was wondering is there a way to reinstall android in case something happens?English
12·3 months agoReinstalling stock Android is just as simple as installing GrapheneOS. But you won’t be willing to revert if you don’t try and go too far into protecting your privacy. Go step by step and it will really make you happy!

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•how do you explain selfhosting to the non-techies in your life?English
4·4 months agoI just like it and I value my privacy. I don’t try to convince anyone. I explain it is both a hobby and a kind of political statement.
You have a very restrictive definition of a smartphone. Sideloading is a natural way for installing apps. In fact it has for a very long time been the only way to install apps on a Windows computer.
Immich, Vaultwarden, Radicale, Cozy, FindMyDevice, Ejabberd, Hauk, Memos, Beszel, Docker-Mailserver, Crowdsec,…
Self-hosting for a bit less than 10 years. My main pain is that my setup is now stable and I have nothing left to tinker with.
Look at https://github.com/coturn/coturn
They should support GrapheneOS rather than try and make something “more free” from LineageOS.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•whats the best sms apps for degoogeld phones
3·5 months agoRight, but how many people are willing to use Signal? I have my own messaging server, and those who don’t want to use it write sms to me.

Instead of asking for a ntfy alternative, could you tell what you want to achieve? Because ntfy has several functions, primarily that of carrying notifications. And it seems that’s not what you want to achieve. Maybe you can find it here.
