Yeah but why should we have to emotionally regulate when it comes to this? As long as food we like is available and we’re getting proper nutrition, why force ourselves to eat what we don’t like?

Why do some people feel a need to pressure people to do things that make them uncomfortable? Who am I hurting by choosing what I eat?
You keep using the word narrow minded and you’re surprised people are insulted
I’m a little insulted you characterize picky eaters as narrow minded. Unless their reasoning is prejudice against other cultures (in which case I woukd agree they’re narrow minded) their reasoning probably is sensitivity to certain tastes and textures
Throwing up because you don’t like the food isn’t the same as an allergy
I’m a somewhat picky eater, not to the extreme that some are but I do limit myself to foods I am sure I will like.
I’m autistic and have sensory issues. I also have a tendency to throw up a lot. I need to choose safe food that I know won’t make me gag and that I’m sure I can physically eat

1·5 hours agoI have family in the Untied States and I’m mad at them for continuing to live there. I’m terrified that they’ll realize it’s time to get out when it’s too late. Like in The Handmaid’s Tale when June and Luke try to escape and realize they should have done it sooner

1·6 hours agoAs a Canadian, I don’t think there’s much I can do. I’ve been trying for years to “sound the alarm” for all the good that’s going to do. I’m starting to think I need a safeplan in November for dealing with my anxiety and depression if and when really bad things happen.
I recommend: comfort food, comfort activities like watching movies, and being in touch with mental health resources
Godspeed America, I hope you find a way to turn this ship around
It is putting them at a disadvantage. I can hear characters speaking french and pick up at least some of what they’re saying. A deaf person who knows some French should have the same opportunity as me to see the French words and interpret some of what is being said. I’m not saying have the subtitles in English, I’m saying have them in the language being spoken on screen so they’re getting the experience intended
Like I said, people who happen to know the language can understand it and so should have the same chance to understand with subtitles. If the director’s intention was nobody understand it, they shouldn’t have them speak in a language people may be able to understand

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your entirely unimportant and inconsequential hot take?
2·12 hours agoI think I’d be happier with the sequel trilogy if Rian Johnson had been in charge of all 3
I noticed this in Meet The Robinsons. A guy says “Madames and monsuiers” and the subtitle says “speaking french” as if the average English speaker doesn’t know what those words mean
This is unfair to bilingual deaf people.
For example, there’s an episode of Bluey with a lot of French. I’m really bad at French but I do know a little of it. I am able to understand some of the dialogue.
Why should a deaf person not have the same right as me to interpret dialogue in a language they happen to understand or understand bits of?

Reading through all the replies, I’m getting the sense that perhaps your coworker is a bit racist but you did a poor job explaining that in your post. Your post comes across as judgemental of all people who avoid certain foods because you did a bad job of explaining that you meant people who avoid foods because of cultural prejudice. I don’t think you’ll find many people on lemmy who are prejudice against other cultures. I’m not sure what answer you expected. There are some who are just racist, others who may not be racist but just don’t trust food they aren’t familiar with because they’re unsure what’s in it.
I think most people avoid certain foods because they either have a medical condition, ethical concerns, or sensory sensitivity. It sounds like you were looking for an answer from the few who are just racist and I’m not sure what explanation you were expecting for their prejudice.
I cook meals from other cultures a lot but I have to be sure I like all the ingredients first.
