That discussion is nothing more than a forum post, as much anecdotal as something posted to reddit. Whoever told him the top case had to be replaced is in error; the battery is glued to the top case, but with special adhesive that releases when pulled (like a strip of tape). iFixit calls this a “moderate” on it’s scale of difficulty.

Don’t know where you’re getting either of those criticisms. You most certainly don’t need to replace the topcase when replacing the battery in any modern apple laptop, and the pairing of the LAS is for calibration purposes.

Insofar as there’s no ethical consumerism under capitalism, I agree. Is Apple better than most or as good as they say? Hardly. But don’t act like you’re some ethical tech warrior because you avoid Apple hardware.

Now, we can have a serious dissuasion about the questionable-to-downright-wrong decisions Apple (the business) is making, and I would think we are 100% aligned on that. I cannot wait until Cook is gone when maybe some sanity can return. Any criticisms of how they’re handling the App Store, their bending of the knee to Trump, and/or the sneaky upsells they’re including in the OS and default apps are fully shared.

That’s fair. But IMO the negatives of Tahoe don’t merit buying old hardware just to temporarily avoiding using it.

I have many legitimate complaints about Tahoe, but my biggest/pettiest complaint is that I’ve been waiting for a Tahoe OS since they started naming OSs California places because Lake Tahoe is my favorite place in California– and this OS shouldn’t be associated with the place.

I know the M4 Air was released with Sequoia, but I’m sure any M4 you bought new would now come with Tahoe. My M4 MacBook Pro bought at the end of the year shipped with Tahoe.

If Tahoe is a dealbreaker, buying used (not Apple refurbished) is probably your only option, and even that is predicated on finding one not yet upgraded. But honestly I don’t think it should be a dealbreaker; while visually it’s a mess and I’m not thrilled with the overall direction of Apple software, it is the present and the future, and does have some niceties over Sequoia. With Alan Dye gone and Tim Cook on his way out, I have some optimism for the future of the OS.

The way I see it you’ve got three options: buy the now released M5 new, find a used one running sequoia (unlikely), or find a used model capable of running Linux.

Those age bands don’t line up well enough to generational cohorts to draw any specific conclusions IMO, other than perhaps it is unfair to paint any generation with a single brush (which, admittedly I did earlier.)
