I don’t frequently have these kinds of debates in public, but the closest I’ve ever gotten to talking a vaccine skeptic out of their position was when I came from the angle of, “these shots are free because insurance companies know they work, and they would rather eat the cost of 100 vaccines than have to pay for every hundredth person to be hospitalized with the flu for 3 days, which costs THEM $40k.”

Around me (Northeast Pennsylvania), I’d say only 70ish % of gas pumps have tap to pay. I am both too young and too old to be bothered to go into the store to pay for gas.

Also, my credit card works with Google wallet on my phone, but it is NOT on board for Google wallet in my Garmin watch.

In Pennsylvania at least, motorcycle helmets are not required by law (mostly), but eye protection actually is.

I’m not sure you were aware when you made this post but there is an IBM software package called DOORS and literally everybody I know who uses it despises it. I don’t work with it directly, but DOORS may actually be worse than Windows.

There’s a good chance I’m not qualified to proclaim this opinion out loud, but this is the internet so…

I don’t think Indonesian belongs in the yellow category. Indonesian has no tenses, no cases, nothing. Sure, there’s little-to-no overlap in the vocab, but the structure of the language was so straightforward, that a month or 2 with the phrasebook was basically all that was required to survive in country. I wasn’t having a lot of deep conversations in Indonesian, but one time I excused myself while squeezing past somebody on a plane, mistakenly giving him the impression that I was local, and ended up getting invited to his sister’s house for dinner during Eid.

For context, I took 2 years of French in High School (where I took it more seriously than you’d think), and I took 3 courses of Russian in undergrad.

This is not true where I live and grew up as a volunteer firefighter (small towns around Northeast Pennsylvania). Nobody from the high schooler jr. firefighters, to the chief got paid for anything.

To add to the confusion: For 2 weeks/year I help out the local ballet studio with stage crew. We have this big white backdrop curtain, and colorful lights are pointed directly at the curtain to make dramatic and moody changes to the background during certain dances. When I heard the name of these, I assumed it was the “psyche curtain” and “psyche lights” because that’s how it is pronounced.

Turns out the box is marked “Cyc.” I have to assume that the people that sold the curtain are way less amateur than I am, so I would like to add this third potential spelling.

Just today, I was at a birthday party talking to a stranger. She said her husband uses a sauna daily, but they have an apartment… So he has a pop-up sauna in the kitchen. She said he uses it, wipes it down, and folds it away.

I don’t. I make one careful, lengthwise cut, then I slice up the halves to get a bunch of semi-circlss. Mostly, I just do this so the cucumber stays planted on the board better (for safety), but not losing the round slices is a nice secondary benefit.
