I think that if we want to be free from google and apple duopoly on mobile we need to embrace linux phones. It is the only solution. Google is trying to close the golden cage slowly and we need to escape on other operating system also on mobile. We re only delay a problem. We need phone preinstalled with linux for mass adoption. We need more apps for linux phones and more userbase.

Ubuntu touch and droidian are quite usable as well, the hardware parts work better (in my experience), but the software is a little bit buggy hahaha.

@goldkiddo dunno if opensource community version, but indeed with Jollaphone you need account to get updates 🙁

And, yes, for me Jolla Phone is only step while waiting really working Linux phone. I’ve been tested PinePhone which worked somehow, but was slow and all ways poor quality hardware. I have also PinePhone Pro, but it’s expensive joke. There’s no phone where PostmarketOS runs so good it can be use daily and mainly (only phone). Bank apps are mandatory, so also somehow working camera and bluetooth. Other Applicationa I’ve been tested I can replase easily with Linux natives. I’ve been thinkind many times, apps are great. Both Phosh and Plasma Mobile (my favor!) are great. But… No working hardware 🙁

People ask this kind of thing about Graphene too, but the reality is a very large number of ‘apps’ are just website wrappers. In the vast majority of cases you can just use the website instead. Add to that though, you are going to have to leave some things on the table to fight this fight, and you have to decide what is most important to you. I used to use my phone and watch to pay ALL THE TIME, I wouldn’t even take my wallet with me most places I went. When I switched to Graphene I had to give that up, but was willing to for what it gave me. We are likely never, or certainly at least not any time soon, going to be able to have everything we can have on an iPhone or a Samsung, on something that respects our privacy and isn’t spying on us.

Interesting. I busted my Pixel’s USB port, so this is a project for my next phone. When that time comes, is there a central clearing house for information on open-source phone OSs? When I do a bald search, it’s mostly suggestions for Ubuntu Touch and Sailfish.

Too many trees, not enough forest. Edit: Yes, that is exactly what I was asking for, but I guess I should have asked for a place that might just regularly review and summarize and compare OSs so I could research which one I might want to install.

But I do have a Moto G-Power from the generation that was good. I wonder if it would be worth it to update the battery and use that.

What device you using it on? My Pixel 4a is not supported very well (yeah, I know I should contribute, but I really don’t have the time right now), and the PinePhone is well… the PinePhone.
