    These counterfeit phones, Cohen said, were either out of warranty or contained counterfeit parts, but Apple “wrongly” believed that they were real phones under real warranties

    This makes it sound the phones were real but out of warranty.

      It would be cheaper to buy an iPhone than make a realistic fake. The issue is that apple can’t tell the difference and can be scammed over offering new replacements for duds.
