Music from a better time
Zombie, a song famously about nothing bad at all happening and how everything was just so great in early 1990s Ireland.
Little did we know at the time that violence in northern Ireland world pale compared to the violence since then.
It doesn’t downplay the deaths and violence in Ireland but in my personal view … the 90s were a better time relatively speaking. At least back then when violence occurred, there were people everywhere that protested and marched for peace and actual organizations and groups that did something about it all.
Now, violence has become normalized, less people march for peace, we are all to numb with entertainment to care and news media is more than willing to bend the realities of violence to justify war.
I love Delores and I listen to her music all the time, especially after she died. But listening to Zombie is way too nostalgic and sad for me … it reminds me of terrible times, times of hope, times of change and times we lost.
Objectively, violence of all kinds has only gone down everywhere in the developed world since the 1990s. Crime, murder, theft, rape, etc, it’s never been a safer time to live in all of History.
That doesn’t erase concerns about today’s very real challenges of course, but remember that our brains are hardwired to forget the bad things about the past faster than the good ones, and that the media don’t make money when reporting on good things.
Does anyone care

It’s funny because I was just telling my buddy Matthew earlier today about how I haven’t heard this song enough in my life
