Is this good or bad? I’m living right next to you guys but I really have no idea about your politics.
We don’t have president in Switzerland with immense power unlike other countries. We have 7 people running the different departments of the federal Council. All from different party. They have to reach a consensus on the decision they take.
Switzerland’s government is quite stable. Not a lot will change. Hopefully he will be replaced by someone competent.
I think he is one of the most liked Federal Councilors though and he was a Federal Councilor for about 12 years. I think his decision is good, especially that he doesn’t resign right in the middle and instead chose to finish his term.
Politically, it depends very much on the next elections how the Federal Council will be composed in the future as three parties are quite close in how many votes they get. The Federal Council is elected by the parliament and the parties decided to follow the “Zauberformel”:
2 seats for each of the three parties with the most votes and one seat for the 4th party.
For the last four years the 4th party would have been the greens but the “Mitte” kept their seat so far. This year it seems that the greens might lose the 4th position again. I’m convinced that it will depend on our summer how the greens will do. If it is terribly hot and we have forest fires, etc. they will probably fare better. He was the main character in charge during the covid-19 pandemic and apparently leaked some “illegal” information to the press. I think that this is not particularly a good or bad thing. Some people might be happy, some not.
