A cloud provider is a single point of failure, even if it advertizes redundancy. Any org can be cut out if the account gets closed, or a miscunfiguration gets deployed on all the provider sites.

We’re talking about different kind of proofs.

Proving a program is correct requires a formal specification and a formal verification with mathematics and/or formal methods. ie proving the behavior and result perfectly match specification for all possible inputs.

A test only proves that a program 1) returns the expected output for a specific input, or limited set of inputs, and 2) appears to behave correctly, ie there may be undefined behaviour but they don’t cause an immediate crash.

Actually proving that C code is correct is not easy.

Having a human developer manually write code that is less harmful/wrong, and doesn’t require proof, is probably easier.

I’m all for GPUs and memory being available to research that benefit public good, within limit. And less of it being available to LLMs.

Fair point, GPUs are often used too, and have other uses for HPC workloads.

There is still a major misallocations of resources for AI. This infrastructure is badly needed by big tech for their AI growth plans. No one else need this much.

There’s no good reasons to build at that scale and so fast, for any reason.

There’s a need to lower overall energy and resources usage, and improve efficiency. Building many large datacenters for LLMs go in the wrong direction.

Mostly out of the loop, I use this fork as well. Apps distributed on the F-Droid repo are OSS, built from source, and screened for malware.

If the fork is no longer maintained I expect it to be removed from the repo, that should be announced on the blog with the regular app news.
