Casual Conversation@piefed.social•What's your favorite quote or obscure reference? let's see if someone else in the comments gets it
3·13 hours agoConfident, Cocky, Lazy, Dead.
I think Alzheimer’s is complicated by having a body, though. My grandma had it and was happy, not angry. It sucked for us and for her because she eventually forgot how to eat & take care of herself at all. To have that lack of understanding of reality doesn’t seem nearly as bad if you are a disembodied consciousness, as this suggests. It seems more like a death than the other choices.
Alternate Dimension I would go for only if it was a gamble not a certain “being torn to shreds by demons over and over” situation.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would you consider the ideal "stoner food?"
3·1 day agoI don’t generally enjoy pot, find the effect annoying not pleasant but twice in my life have had some laced with something wonderful (once, hashish, once I have no idea) and soul food is where it’s at. Beans and rice and sausage, bursting with flavor. Nothing sweet and nothing so fancy just simple and satisfying.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What job do most people think is good, but you don't think you would enjoy?
5·1 day agoPolitician, boss or Queen, I am useless in politics. Anything like that where you have to navigate people trying to get your job, backbiting, any sort of office politics I cannot deal with at all, certainly could not handle it AS a job, no way. I just crumble. I need to be able to just do my job and understand everyone wants everyone to succeed where I work.
On the other hand, in jobs that objectively suck but are satisfying to me, I have enjoyed restaurant work and raising children. If I won the lottery and didn’t need to succeed I would open a bar; if my husband died I’d take in foster kids.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come there isnt really any OTC allergy meds for stuffy nose?
3·2 days agoI agree with the consensus here- you are thinking about this wrong. Allegra-D, the one behind the counter in my state, is an allergy medicine we use for colds, because it works better than anything labeled as cold medicine.
If you are saying you want something that treats allergies, and by treating them unstuffs your nose, that Allegra-D will work. I don’t understand why you think it won’t. The pseudoephedrine in it (the D in the name) is a vasoconstrictor that will open your nose.
If it’s the same drug labeled as a cold medicine, it would work exactly the same.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Why do we have shampoo, conditioner, and body wash soaps?
5·2 days agoI’ve seen pictures of people from the past with my hair type, from the time before conditioner. I will buy conditioner. Styling goops too. Do you mean everyone should cut their hair so short it doesn’t matter? I like having styled hair - will agree it’s culture/marketing but so what?
Could use shampoo as body wash, sure, not so different. I don’t use natural soaps because in hard water they do more harm than good. Conditioner is a non negotiable. Sometimes I just rinse and condition, but never wash without conditioner-ing.
My husband keeps his hair very short but that involves haircut every two weeks, it’s not cheaper overall.
Yes sir, I do that. I’m on both sides of these requests as I admin some of the financial software, sometimes can fix things before having to involve IT.
And to purplemonkeymad’s point, OMG I don’t know who writes Microsoft’s error messages but they are nonsense.
“The program has stopped working.”
Thanks.
I send the request and list the troubleshooting steps I have tried. Mostly so that they know it’s not frivolous but also to avoid duplicate work.
But so often those stupid steps work. Turn it off and back on. Uninstall and reinstall.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I just halted a job interview process - due to self respect.
20·4 days agoThen could you not do this testing on a machine at their office? What the heck?
Coquito I call Ron con 5 leches.
Leche evaporada, leche regular, leche condensada dulce (lechera), leche de coco, y crema.
Why have 3 or 4 when you can have 5 and rum?

Cocktails, the libationary art!@lemmy.world•My oh my, Strawberry and Rye
1·5 days agoA roomba with an enormous cocktail on it! I could only wish for a floor that clean and smooth, that’s the coffee table. Have never seen a white roomba though.
Emotionally ready like am I ok with it, or would I rage rage against the dying of the light? Yes I think so, I could go gently.
Don’t want to, still happy but I am not that worried, if I had to I could, my kids are grown, I have experienced a lot of stuff, learned a lot, enjoyed being alive and physically embodied, probably more than many people do in a lifetime. I would not feel like I got ripped off or anything.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does smelling your food while you cook it make it taste bland?
1·7 days agoThat doesn’t happen to me, but I cook for my family every day, usually just once. (So not so infrequently It’s something unusual, but not so often it’s a drag). It’s more like an appetizer or something.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a science educator who shows in a video how they hand wash dishes?
3·7 days agoIf you have enough sinks, or a big enough pot to soak them in, one soak in hot soapy water, wash them all in the next sink, do your scrub-scrub without rinsing then rinse them all in bulk, then final rinse by dipping them into a sink full of hot water with a little bleach.
Then dry them with a clean towel.
That’s how we hand wash when the dishwasher was broken and someone in the house was sick. Because otherwise my husband will wash them with the water running the whole time.
One of the odd effects I’ve noticed with the last round of inflation is that prices are converging. Cheaper places raised prices more than more expensive places. I never liked McDonald’s - the french fries are good but I’ve never chosen to go there, only had them incidentally. But it was cheap. Not now, it’s more like going anywhere, so why would you go there? As someone else said, I can get tacos down the street, closer than any fast food place and they are pretty fast, or we go to the cafe up the street, they did have inflation but at least the money stays local.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I've never been in a situation where me having a gun would have made things bettter.
81·8 days agoGuy with knife in my face, I looked right at him and said what the fuck? He said he was trying to talk to me & I didn’t respond and I just said that a knife was NOT the way to get someone to talk to you and he put it away, walked me to my floor and said thanks & bye.
I don’t know, exactly, and just like a gun surely it wouldn’t work in every situation but de-escalation works more often than you might think.
Only once have I had to use violence, I kicked a guy off me (I am physically stronger than I look, not objectively strong but enough to surprise someone) kicked like a fucking kangaroo, so hard he hit the wall and believe it or not, it shocked him into stopping what he was doing and I left.

Well this is one thing that’s different in Florida. You can’t get us to dress up. Restaurants though? Sometimes the fancy ones are so good!
I do love to cook so we are eating mostly at home but I consider it “putting in effort” when my husband takes me out for supper, that seems like a normal thing to think? Especially if I thought it wasn’t his preference. They probably did find you attractive in your casual wear (otherwise would have swiped left or whatever the equivalent is) but wanted to acknowledge your effort in dressing up.
