  • I checked the data from here in case you’re interested. These are the US intertie flow numbers but they have Alberta numbers that are similar.

    • 2021 BC net exported 3.92TWh
    • 2022 BC net exported 3.65 TWh
    • 2023 BC net imported 9.48 TWh
    • 2024 BC net imported 7.57 TWh
    • 2025 BC net imported 2.77 TWh
    • 2026 Jan to Apr BC net exported 0.48 TWh but importing from AB, and the dry summer months are still ahead of us so we’ll see.
    • NB: “net buying” is not the same as “net exporting” even if I think that’s what you meant. The timing and pricing of when our exports are bought and sold mean that BC could make money even if we sold less energy than we bought.

I do worry about the droughts predicted over the next decade, hopefully we can find suitable places to build wind/solar and build there.

  • This is because we bear the cost of oil companies extracting fossil fuels from under our feet, burn it to pollute our air, pollute our water with direct and down-chain products, making us sick and costing taxpayers again. These are called externalities, which in effect becomes a socialized cost and privatized profit. Bankrupt shell companies put the cleanup for their operations on us and the fees Alberta charges to cover end-of-life costs are far too small.

So, a carbon tax is the free-market, economic solution to use price signals to accurately appraise the cost to humanity, which Smith’s government is distorting.

  • Methodology

The data comes from geolocation based trips tracking Canadian devices traveling to U.S. metro areas based on Cuebiq’s stops table. A “Canadian device” is defined as a unique device per day in the stops table with the country code set as “Canada” and the device type as “Home.” Home devices are classified based on the duration and timing of the stops from an observation of the past 84 days, and each device is assigned a unique anonymized identifier. These Canadian devices have been recorded between April 1, 2024 - March 31, 2026 to measure daily trip occurrences.

Interesting data but rather disconcerting that Canadians’ and Americans’ cellular devices are being tracked by ad agencies like this.

  • As I wrote in another reply, an effective party inspires people to action. Still, a good point.

I’m definitely close with my neighbours, engage in boycots and encourage others to do so, but movement building is more than just me, it involves amassing power of the collective and directing it to projects: that isn’t totally in my skillset at this moment and I presume there are others in a similar situation.

I’m a BCNDP supporter, have volunteered for them, and subscribed to my local riding association’s newsletter, but I’ve not really attached myself to the federal party for reasons I put in my original comment. I’m actively reconsidering it with Avi at the helm.
