I guess the threat of people not voting for them. Most MPs will live in their constituency, or at least very near - it’s only really well known figures like Farage who can get away with being parachuted in, and even then it took him about 8 goes to win a seat!

Perhaps worth clearing up that although Count Binface was standing in yesterday’s Clacton by election, this isn’t a photo from that, but (I think) from Andy Burnham’s successful bid to be the MP of Makerfield, near Manchester.
On the contrary, he’s rarely shown his face there, even after being elected MP. He’s a shameless grifter.
As for being able to stand where you don’t live, yeah, it’s just a feature of the UK system that we don’t require residency. There’s probably a rule about you must have a registered office in the constituency, but that’s about it I think.

1·5 天前I absolutely LOVED my 6p, but yeah, had two of them die on me, which wasn’t ideal. Although I was able to trade in the second one when I got my 2xl, and they gave me the full original value of the 6p back! 😁

1·5 天前Yeah, I’ve looked into Graphene, but I dunno, it’s years since I messed with rooting and flashing ROMs, etc. Not sure I can be bothered. Might try on my current Pixel after I get a replacement sorted out.

2·5 天前Yeah, same, I used to mess around a bit with rooting and ROMs, but for a while there’s been little need from my point of view. Really not sure I can be bothered getting back into that now though.

Books@lemmy.world•What is your favorite work inspired by Murder on the Orient Express?
2·5 天前Ha ha, yeah, I read that one just a few months ago. Did a bit of a binge over May/June.
Whole team is always nursing an injury… 😞

7·6 天前Seconding the Nero Wolfe books, they’re absolutely superb. Archie is a brilliant narrator.

1·6 天前I wish someone other than Google would try having the cameras spread across the full width of the phone, so that the phone can sit steady on a flat surface. Why do they always have to be off to one side like that?

31·8 天前The linked article sums my position up perfectly. I’ve had a Nexus 6P, a Pixel 2XL and now a Pixel 6 Pro which, were it not for a cracked screen and (small but increasing) issues with overheating, I’d be happy to stick with.
However there’s no way I’m even considering a Pixel for my next phone - much too expensive and fuck all that AI bullshit.
Not sure what I’ll go for, and not looking forward to a phone with an OEM skin on the OS but Google has finally driven me away from the Pixel line. It’s a shame.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do so many people regardless of whether their reasonings are justified or not pinpoint South Park for ruining a generation of millenials?
52·10 天前Stone and Parker are the embodiment of genX politics. That is the cynical mantra that people who believe in stuff are the real fools.
Even if that was their mantra (which I don’t think it is), it’s absurd to generalise that to all of Gen X, as if all of us have the same politics.

26·12 天前Debt first but redirect the payments straight into your savings (possibly slightly lower to make it easier).
And treat yourself to something small (like $50 or so), as a reward for doing the sensible thing with most of it.
And then have a brilliant time in Japan 😁

Books@lemmy.world•AI-generated stories rated better quality than human-written ones, study finds
3·12 天前To me it’s just about how it came to be - if there any value in art (be it film, books, photos, TV, whatever) then it’s because a human (or humans) made it. Because they did what someone else couldn’t have done, because the other person wasn’t them. A machine that synthesises other people’s work and makes an imitation of it can’t ever be the same.

Football@sopuli.xyz•Luke Littler [competitive Darts star] on Lamine Yamal: "He hasn't achieved much"
21·12 天前I don’t agree with the general sentiment, but this bit isn’t unfair, assuming it refers solely to Yamal’s World Cup:
“I mean, he didn’t really do much, did he? He maybe scored one goal. And provided one assist.”
Littler is right with that IMO - Yamal did virtually nothing at the World Cup (in contrast to his superb Euro 2024).

I love this. Definitely going to try it sometime 😁
