It’s funny, when they announced their third price increase in as many months, it was the final motivation i needed to set up a NAS and Jellyfin. And because i have terabytes of storage, I downloaded the entire catalogue… of Linux distros. And I continue to seed them

This was our last streaming service we were hanging on to now we will move forward without watching any TV and I’m OK with that. These last few years are really forcing us to be a little healthier. Can’t afford junk food, fast food, and now TV. It sucks but I refuse to he dragged down by the constant barrage of bad news.

Does anyone have a dead simple tutorial/webpage to setup jellyfin? I always assume it needs a dedicated NAS and I’m not going to do that. I have spare laptops.

Can someone show me a simple way to share an external drive to Jellyfin in Ubuntu? It’s the last part I’m missing from my setup

            USB formatted to FAT32

The file path will not work in Jellyfin.

I’ve tried using the terminal to set a mount point that Jellyfin can use. Apparently the problem is that Jellyfin runs as its own user and so can’t see USB drives that my account connects.

…or something…? I’ve been trying off-and-on for months. I’m only a dabbler in Linux; getting this set up with an old laptop is my attempt to learn.

            I’m so confused please help.

              You need to:

              • create the mountpoint
              • mount the drive to the mountpoint
              • Give Jellyfin permissions to access the files there

Since you are using FAT32 which does not support file level permissions I guess this will show up as ‘owned by root’. You will need to do something like this or this

Disney and the rest of the streaming services can fuck off and welcome back piracy with their shenanigans.

Shame they’re such greedy dumbasses that continue to kill the golden goose.

We share all our streaming services and so far nothing has happened because we don’t use smart televisions but only dumb monitors connected to PC/laptop. They can’t figure us out. I don’t think I will ever use a tv again, first because we do not watch live tv anymore, second because smart TVs spy on us and on top try to put ads on and other shite. A mini PC in the living room looks cute, can play anything including local data and they can’t tell if accounts are shared.

Just a reminder that if you don’t like the way that the entertainment is presented, your best option is to ignore it. If you pirate it, you’ll probably talk about it with others. That will lead to engagement, and in turn others will pay to see the content. If you ignore it, then the company gets nothing from you. If you truly want to punish these companies for policies you don’t like, piracy isn’t the answer, boycotting their product is.

Edit: The downvotes on this prove that you only pirate because you want shit for free, not to protest. You are the same as the looters during marches. You don’t do what you do to make things better, you do it to get free shit. You are the reason we can’t have nice things.

Sure, by all means. But how many people watch a show or movie they enjoy and don’t talk to friends or family about it? Secondary advertising is still advertising. If you convince someone else to buy it, you aren’t solving any problems.

Back when I was active on the high seas, I would talk about stuff I watched all the time. When someone would ask where I watched I’d tell them they would be welcome to come by and copy some of my Linux ISOs to an external drive if they wanted, as I wasn’t willing to promote the paid avenues for getting those distros.

Oh yeah, god forbid people miss some form of entertainment! Whatever will they do? If only there was INFINITE entertainment out there. The assumed need to consume is bullshit, and people that feel that they must have everything are sucking that fat capitalist teat harder than anyone else, regardless of if they pirate or not. When you start to pull back from the idea that you have to have it all, you realize how little of it you actually need, and then you can be selective with your content consumption.

Or you can keep watching Disney shows, bitching about how much you hate Disney shows, all while talking to friends and coworkers about Disney shows. Oh, you pirate it? You are still advertising for Disney. You’re a goddamned billboard.
