“You will become more conservative when you get a job.”

Me after being steadily employed for 22 years: hammer-sickle

“You will become more conservative when you own a house.”

Me after owning a house for 5 years: hammer-sickle

Unless by “conservative” they mean conserving against liberal and chud mindset.

Getting a house really pushed me over the edge because it made me realise how much stress evaporates from your life when you have the choice of not having to move every few months or couple of years at most. Like you mean I can do work to improve things, and it’ll still be there? I can invest effort into community relationships? This stability is off the charts.

“You will become more conservative when you get a job.” means “you’ll want lower income taxes”, as though that would make a difference.

“You will become more conservative when you own a house.” is substantially more true, as it ties the owner’s financial future to a piece of property, which means they’ll tend to favor policies that raise property values and create homelessness.

Both of these assume that the young person in question is politically illiterate and stands to benefit from the status quo. Since the US school system isn’t going to explain why communism is good or even give a concrete definition, all you are left with is a “politically neutral” outlook where the only acceptable options are the two major parties: fascism or fascism with a human face. I imagine this is less true for people younger than me due to the presence of more politicized social media, but my graduating class had no political understanding at all.

I already hated landlords, but having my own house made me start to hate HOAs even while my house wasn’t technically part of some HOA system.

Having grillman get so enraged at the native plants and pollinator-friendly vegetable garden I had out front to the point that they “helped” by destroying it all with their mowers while I was away with plausible deniability, smirking at me like prestige TV creeps whenever they saw me in the weeks ahead because they knew I had no legal way to retaliate, did that.

The number of entitled boomers I’ve had go full, “this is what I get for helping people” when I’ve brought up complaints to them. The crocodile tears are wild coming out of people with grey hair.

“You will become conservative when you get a job.” Says the people in a country where the rich see the fact they have workers as a problem to be solved and what few jobs are around are getting harder and harder to even get an interview for.

If that’s true, then porky has zero survival instincts.
