FediMeteo brings real-time weather updates to the Fediverse, covering cities across Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands (with more regions coming soon!).
Using the power of ActivityPub and the simplicity of snac, FediMeteo posts accurate forecasts and updates directly to your favorite social platform.
Why tho?
What’s the use case for a ActPub based weather info service that wouldn’t be adequately addressed by a basic API on an existing service?
Incidentally, FediMeteo uses the existing Open-Meteo API. The use case is just… you can follow your nearest city on Mastodon and get forecasts in your home feed?
If it works as a basic post bot I guess there’s something to that, just seems and odd extra step when you’re already using a phone/computer that likely already has some kind of weather widget built in.
I followed my city’s feed so that I am regularly reminded of the weather and don’t have to actively check a source for it. Let’s see how long I follow it.

Activity Pub is a very popular way to decentralize.
With political uncertainty around centralized meteorological data infrastructure, it makes sense to continue the process of decentralization. The underlying APIs can be changed in the future if needed.
