Summary

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced a 27% tariff on Mexican imports, mirroring Trump’s recent but temporarily halted tariff threats against Mexico.

Noboa claims the move will boost local manufacturing but may also strengthen ties with Washington.

The decision comes amid Ecuador’s diplomatic conflict with Mexico over the arrest of ex-Vice President Jorge Glas.

While trade between Ecuador and Mexico is minimal, the tariffs reflect Noboa’s alignment with Trump, whom he praised as a victory for Latin America. Noboa faces re-election this Sunday.

I don’t think it’ll have the same impact an American tariff would have. Ecuador only imports around $540 million worth of goods from Mexico. according to government data. The biggest single import was medication, represents only 12.6% of the goods that come from there.
