I used to have a German Shepherd and that’s how I would play with her cause she wouldn’t give the stick (or small log) back without a fight, so I’d throw one for her to fetch and hide another behind my back. When she came back and played keep away for a bit I’d pull out the other stick and she’d excitedly drop the one she had in her mouth and go and chase the new one.

Was a good way to tire her out, god I miss that dog.
