Written by Shmerke Kaczerginski after the death of his wife Barbara Kaufman in the Vilnius Ghetto. Shmerke Kaczerginski participated in the Ghetto Uprising and then fought as a partisan after escaping the ghetto liquidation. He survived the war, dying in a plane crash in Argentina in 1954.

Avrom Brudno was an inmate in the Vilnius Ghetto where he created many hit songs. After the liquidation of the ghetto he was deported to the Estonian concentration camp of Klooga where he died
