Profit motive does indeed result in many poor decisions being made in many industries. People make entertainment media and handle the legacy of a franchise not truly out of a love for the source material but solely with profits in mind…and let me tell you, throwing a Star Wars logo on something to an audience that is already conditioned to worship mediocrity? You’re gonna make a STUPID amount of money.
You’ll also probably notice sequels are either usually pretty immediate or the idea is past the prime point of its market viability and they shelve it indefinitely or until cult fanbases illustrate clearly enough they are still an exploitable market, etc. etc.
Yes, because sequels of successful movies are less risky than completely new movies.
