Tbf, the RoC can not be as much of a battering ram because its a bunch of islands. China has enough firepower to blockade and starve them out. Once the lights go out and food runs out most people will reconsider. However, the seas around and the coast of China will be battlefields. On the coast the favorite military targets of the US are en masse - civilians. On the sea the PLAN is numerically dwarved by the US navy, but China has a shitload of anti-navy assets.
The US navy might launch attacks from beyond missle range and run blockades everywhere,they already try the latter parts to starve China of oil.
Anyway, while islands are harder to invade, they are easier to neutralize. Ukraine receives weapons via the polish border. “Taiwan” can only get stuff by sea.

I don’t actually think this is the case. The US just has higher total tonnage, but afaik China already has a larger navy by number of ships.
The second point to remember here is that the US is a global empire and has its navy spread out all over the world. It cannot afford to take all of its naval assets and put them in the vicinity of China. It will always be operating with a fraction of its total capabilities due to other fronts it needs to maintain. China only needs to defend its own coast. So China would have numerical and local tonnage superiority.

I remember Hegseth, in an interview, talking about some sort of “war game” simulation in which the USN got completely obliterated by China. Not sure if it was against the PLAN specifically, but it was still defeated by China.
So if there is any truth to what he yapped on at that time, it seems the military brass would be very, very apprehensive to engaging China directly. I mean, they don’t admit it publically, at least not entirely & bluntly, at that, but behind the scenes in the current fiasco against Iran they know they’re in major hot water. I imagine many of them are anxious at the thought of having to openly engage with the PRC, especially while being simultaneously engaged on multiple other fronts.
