I played a lot of soccer growing up and had enough success to have potential for collegiate experience if I pursued it in the US. I have never understood why people two hand tossed it in front of them with backspin instead of just placing it for free kicks. Is there some advantage to it? I know certain types of balls were specifically placed a certain way because players thought the air valve position would make a difference. This seems like an exact opposite but also completely unnecessary. Is it just supposed to look cool?

That usually happens in free kicks, the referee marks the position and you are not supposed go further than that, so you stay there but you throw the ball some inches to get a little closer, a spin is given to the ball to avoid it to roll. That’s the obvious reason at least in my country.
