Firefox VPN is just Mullvad but you pay Mozilla on top of it. I recommend using something like iVPN/AirVPN (though I’ve had slowness issues with AirVPN while browsing the general web, although weirdly enough didn’t have any such issues while torrenting).
Just disable Secure DNS so that you’re using your VPN’s DNS and you’ll be fine.

The DNS default settings pissed me off. It should default to what is set by the user.
