Assuming i never had to call anyone more than a few miles from me anyway, how practical would it be to stop having a phone altogether and just use MeshCore or Meshtastic for short range communication? What troubles would i run into from not having a phone?
I figure i could even buy radios for people i need to talk to and with no phone bill this would pay for itself in about a year.

“hey it was really nice to meet you. Have you heard of meshtastic? No? So you don’t have it I guess? … That’s okay. Well, I have an extra radio here, why don’t you take this? No seriously it’s okay. No unfortunately I can’t text you, but if you take this… Then connect to it through Bluetooth, here, let me show you… Well I guess it was nice to meet you too. If you ever get meshtastic just send a message on LongFast and ask for Henry. Yeah haha you probably won’t I know.”
It’ll be awkward for the rest of your life. Can you embrace that sort of awkwardness in every social interaction?
This is a good point. I’d be more likely to end up using email for everything, since that’s another thing most people already have.
Yeah for your day to day, email can work. For a specific friend in distance who’s similarly geeky, meshtastic or any LoRa mesh can work sometimes, for bytes of data, and only really text. And if they’re more than one hop away it might not always work.
I wish more people had mesh gear but it’s mostly hobbyist right now, and your literal mileage will vary depending on where you are (and line of sight).
