I only ask because I’ve noticed more than 3 posts are either hidden or gone. I’m assuming I haven’t already got banned in some way, but I’m also kinda confused how this lemmy federation crap works. Can I sub to non-monero lemmy communities with this profile or do I have to host my own instance to do that? sorry for being smolbrain

This is still ambiguous to me but only because I don’t understand this new definition of ‘federating’. For example, I’ve gone to a few other lemmy instances and tried logging in with the same user/pass to no avail. Is this because they’ve already ‘defederated’ us or because we were never ‘federated’ to begin with?

Each server (instance) is its own thing with its own rules and logins, but they all share the data of communities and posts when those are subscribed to by outside instance users, unless one blocks the other (defederated). Think of it like email, different clients sending each other email, and a few might be flagged as spam and not seen. So to your point, you only need to login to one of the places and just subscribe to others outside to see them in your feed.

Okay, I’m learning, but still feel I’m missing something. I understand what you meant about being able to sub to any community on any server. The problem I’m encountering now is that there are a few non-monero communities I’m subbed too, but it doesn’t display any of their posts or anything when I go to them through monerotown. If I go to their direct link I no longer have a login…maybe reddit is a necessary simplicity and convenience for smoothbrains like me…
