I saw another post here talking about supporting this instance and the costs of storage. Obviously there are going to be funding needs which made me wonder about advertising on Lemmy. Is it possible? Is it banned? What about Lemmy in general? The Fediverse as a whole? I’m mostly just curious.
I’d prefer a donation model personally. I hope it is sustainable without advertisement.
This. I’ll try to run the instance with donations. If it doesn’t work out and I get fired from my job etc. I will pass it on to someone who can do.
Agreed, and we can also have lemmy gold!
I guess that would be an instance-by-instance thing, supporting each individual instance’s hosting fees, or maybe some kind of moderation support scheme.
First off I’m no expert. I’m new here. But from what I’ve been reading, if an instance wants to have an advertiser there’s nothing to stop them. The thing is other instances might unfederate from them.
Personally, I don’t see an issue with advertising as long as it respects the user’s privacy. In a community for EDC go ahead and have every tenth post followed by an ad for pens, flashlights, pocket knives, or whatever. I just don’t want those ads following me around all of Lemmy and the internet.
But advertising with strict rules wouldn’t last long. In the end we do need to figure out how to support the Fediverse.
That’s a good point. Each instance probably has different needs.
I wish there was another way. Ads have ruined a lot of good things on the internet.
Not just on the internet.
