Cold weather payments have been triggered for thousands of people living in Wales after some households endured subzero temperatures for seven consecutive days. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) ordered the payments to be made in 12 postcode areas in Wales, as they were triggered on Monday, January 22, giving households an extra £25 towards their heating bills.

It comes after temperatures dropped below freezing in recent days, followed by fierce Storm Isha which left some homes without power, roads closed and flood warnings in place. A gust of 90mph was recorded at Capel Curig in Eryri on Sunday afternoon, while the storm itself was still hundreds of miles away. As of Monday, all of Wales remained under a yellow weather warning from the Met Office for wind.
