People are collecting signatures for a ballot initiative that would require all new tolls on state highways to go to a public vote before being implemented. They need 200,000 signatures to get this on the ballot. From there, people can vote as to whether they want this new rule or not. Polls are a regressive tax, like sales tax, that impacts low-income and working class people the most.

    I don’t agree that free highways are a progressive win given that you need to buy a car to use them. The current system is that the government spends much more on providing free roads for people who drive than they spend on transportation for people who don’t (trains and busses). I think it would be great for this trend to reverse. A reversal would likely include charging car drivers more for driving, possibly with tolls.
