Started having a conversation about it in another casual thread and it was suggested I make a post.
Its a 17 track compilation of 80s songs, some well known like hit from Depeche Mode, Madonna, Duran Duran, and The Pet Shop Boys, some are more underground like Skinny Puppy, Love and Rockets, etc. It was up to the contributing artist who they wanted to cover. And some really amazing people stepped up to contribute, like Betty X, PreCog, Missing in Stars, Giant Monsters on the Horizon, and so many more.
The recipient of the preceeds is Charles Levi, he is a well loved and respected musician in the scene and was in bands like My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Pigface, The Newlydeads. Not a mainstream artist by any means, but he contributed to films like The Crow and Cool World, and had a huge impact on the dark electronic scene.
But yeah! Sometimes getting this together was like herding eccentric cats, a ton of different personalities all working towards a goal. Everyone was really cool though and we got it finished in the end.
Im honestly really proud of what we were able to do in a relatively short time and I appreciate everyone involved.
For people worried that this goes against the rule “no promotional content”, this is obviously a charity, and also there is a difference between being a Lemmy user with a side project, and being a project leader with a Lemmy promotional account.
OP definitely belongs to the first category.
Maybe we could have “Show what you created” posts in the future.
A little bit of show and tell.
Yeah, I was definitely worried about it being a promotion. I’ve been doing music for a long time, but I gave up the idea that it would pay my bills a decade ago. That’s just not a reality anymore and got more abysmal during and after covid.
Its 100% a creative outlet and side projects for me. By day I am an under employed project manager. By night I am an idealistic and also under employed musician. Oh what a fate! :)
Well it’s not casual conversation either way.
It can be a starter, as other people interested in such projects might have questions to ask to OP, or people who worked on similar initiatives might have insights of anecdotes to share.
If it becomes a problem, I will gladly delete it.
And if anyone is like, I NEED this, or you are a DJ who wants to spin it, or whatever, just message me for a download code.
Also, going to be available on streaming services after Feb 14, wanted to give it a couple of weeks to stew on Bandcamp first.
Very cool!
What other side projects do people have? Like the type of thing you do, just to do.
My favorite track is probably Missing in Stars covering Hold Me Now. It’s soooo good.
