    Absolutely true. It’s amazing how everyone in the UK (and I guess probably most of the west) think of 1984 as entirely based on Stalin’s Soviet Russia, whereas it was mostly based on life in the UK. Winston was basically an author insert, Orwell had the exact same job in real life working as a propagandist for the UK in rewriting facts, while British intelligence opened everyone’s mail including his own, monitored most of his conversations, and all the ‘ministries’ engage in active disinformation against their own civilians, voting was suspended and censorship was uniquitous.
