New accounts creations of the whole fediverse went up by 100k today

There was a former reddit mod on here a few days ago talking about how a small percentage of users make most of the posts/comments there. Personally, I’m glad to get away from that.
There may not be much content here, but at least the average person can be heard.
I heard the rule of thumb with social media is 1/9/90. 1% are poster/content creators 9% are commenters 90% are lurkers
Just need to attract that 1% and the house of cards comes tumbling down.

I’ve noticed this sentiment a lot over here! A lot of people that were lurkers back on Reddit have decided to join the conversation instead of just scrolling. It is nice!
I am one of them. I try to comment now on Lemmy especially when I see other people mention being Reddit lurkers.
It’s something small that means a lot when added together. One comment a day means you are an active user.
It’s actually quite refreshing typing out a comment and not just erasing what I wrote right away like I would always do on Reddit. I always felt like there was hardly a point putting effort into comments on Reddit, unless I was on a more niche sub.
So other people had this experience? Happy to know I wasn’t alone and going crazy.

I’ve missed Reddit but I’m realizing now the number of times I’ve reflex clicked Apollo that my usage was unhealthily heavy.
I’m enjoying Lemmy and due to both it being new and more empty (but enjoyable!) I’m online much less and I think it’s a good change.
That plus the communities here are small enough that k feel like my posts or comments are actually seen and responded to now which is nice!
This has been an easier transition than mastodon. On Twitter I relied on specific people’s content to feel like it was worth my time. Not all of them moved over or posted much
On Reddit I just need replies in topics and it can be by anyone
I’d like to move to Mastodon so badly, but none of the people I follow (mostly YouTubers) have moved there so I don’t have any reason to be on mastodon…

Same with Twitter, I don’t mind wading through the odd cesspool if it means I’ll run into some good people and fun memes but both Twitter and Reddit really went to shit, and quickly too.

Yes. You should be able to edit posts.

IMO, probably because you couldn’t on Reddit… People haven’t figured out that this platform allows more freedom to users than Reddit does.
And also it’s not really due to reddit, it’s mostly the twitter changes that make their users switch to Mastodon.

I wonder if at some point this will happen with twitter to mastodon. I know mastodon has currently larger community then lemmy, but I believe there never was this moment of sudden growth.

However, this bot counts MASTODON users - not fediverse users. The graph has probably nothing to do with reddit exodus but with Musks announcement that birdsite users can only see 300 posts until they register and pay.
After weeks of not really wanting to go through the “hassle” of setting up an account, I finally just sat down and did it and it’s been cool so far. Took me a bit to wrap my head around the fediverse.
I’ve found it’s a lot easier to get your head around with wefwef on IOS. It’s basically simplified everything into an app I’m used to using with reddit

I’m pretty certain this is just mastodon users, the Lemmy and Kbin usercounts are quite tricky to track.
This recent push of Masto users I believe were being attributed to musks rate limits and restriction of anonymous reading of tweets.

Apollo refugee here learning about this new federated world. Is this specific to some servers? I signed up to lemmy.world and lemme.ee to have a bit of an explore and both required a captcha.
There’s almost 2 million zombie accounts on random unknown instances that have captchas disabled.
All the main instances should be almost all legitimate users.
After being here a few weeks, your “home” server doesn’t matter too terribly much, as long as it stays federated with other servers. You can subscribe to communities (subreddits) in other servers and they’ll appear on your feed. It’s kinda cool. You do have to do a little more work building your communities you want to see and participating, as there no algorithm to tell you what to see. It’s with it though! Sort by Hot or Top Day and you’re good to go!
If memory holds, server admins can require any of (or none of) capchas, email verification, or manual approval for making a new account. They can also fully disable the ability to make accounts.

We’ve got an election coming up in 16 months in the US. So I imagine we’ll see a lot of bots registering soon.

They do for some reason, we have had a serious problem of thousands of bots registering on instances with no protection, admins have been working hard to put the situation back into control.

This isn’t just Lemmy. It’s also Mastodon and other activitypub services.
kbin instance, calling in! And that’s the cool thing. It’s not just one website, or even one project. But we can all still communicate.
Nearly 13 million apparently. The active users count is more useful for weeding out bots and people who sign up and then forget about it. I’m not sure where that stands.
This website here (https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy) that tracks Lemmy statistics shows around 60,000 monthly active users but no telling how accurate this is. It seems we’re in the middle of a major event taking place with people shifting over so it could take some time before we know how many people really left Reddit and moved here.
The largest current Lemmy instance alone (lemmy.world) only came into being a little over a month ago, just about the time Reddit dropped their stink-turd announcement about their intent to API-price third-party apps out of existence.
It now sits at about 80k users. It was right at 60k just before those apps stopped working, so it’s grown significantly just in the last 48 hours. No idea how long we can sustain this kind of growth, but it’s good to see this space blossoming into its own cool thing.
Active users, after the APIs stopped working, seems to be increasing by about 10k a day atm.

Maybe people don’t know which instance to use and just made several… Raw stats doesn’t show the real number of people. I made like 4 on different instances when I joined.
That is a thing, although I believe the vast majority has only one account. Some two, much fewer more. It is only natural that those with more accounts are more visible in conversations - much less people will tell you they made only one account, because they aren’t that much aware of that possibility.
But mostly, I believe the multi account crew is dwarfed by the bot army. So overall, the multi accounts probably don’t change much about the numbers.

And why am I first to point this out?Its not just Mastodon’s user count, its all accounts on ActivityPub which include Mastodon but also Lemmy.

No, it’s only Mastodon. It sources its data from instances.social, which only lists Mastodon (and forks).
Very sorry if I’m wrong then, but why does this data from fediobserver.com state 8m mastodon users and 2m lemmy?
Lead my to believe the graph from OP is also Fediverse as a whole
