My wife, a vet tech, has a hospital patient named “Stephanie.” It’s a dog. We’re both grossed out by this name. What are some others?
Why does Stephanie as a pet name gross you out? Am I missing something?
I agree, I actually think it’s kinda cute.
Normal human names are weird for pets.
Hubert for a dog? Sounds pretty good. John, for a dog? Umm…
Most all names are human names. Why is Stephanie or John different? My dogs name was Charlie and it was just fine.
Of course, but what I’m saying is that there’s a range. Charlie is within the range that just “feels right” regardless of whether it’s a pet or not. Stephanie is kind of outside of that range, IMO along with quite a few other names. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be named that, or that all animals with that name are just “wrong” lol that’s crazy. Do you think you’d agree that John is a less fitting name for a dog than Trevor? Or that Huey, Huell, Hubert are all more fitting for a pet than Jane or Carl?
I dunno, clearly people feel both ways about it in this thread lol. I’m not saying that all pets should be named Mr. Fluffybunbuns, just that some human names don’t really seem super fitting for animals - be it a personality, how the name sounds when they’re being called.
I mean, this isn’t limited to animals either. Surely you’ve met someone who is clearly a David but for some reason their name is Joseph. But they just exude David energy? This is like the opposite of that, where the animal just exudes an energy that simply isn’t the name they were given.
Oh, I have another example. My rescue dogs name was Ashley. She did look very pretty like an Ashley, but she was very much not an Ashley.
I named my cat Craig to intentionally capitalize on this effect. I think it’s funny, even if no one else does.
My cat’s name is Chaos and is the chillest fucking cat ever made. Comes when called, politely waits to be fed, lays contentedly for belly rubs. Also fetches but that’s because this hairy fucker thinks they’re a dog.
My chaos is very similar. Except he has learnt to open my cupboard door and climbs my clothes at 2am…
Well, years and years ago, my neighbor had a little black-furred mutt.
Wanna guess its name? It rhymes with bigger.
Now, you wanna hear the hilarious part? My neighbor was African American. She named it that because, “ain’t like white folk don’t call black dogs that, at least she’ll know to come when someone says it, and she can bite their ass.”
Miss Margaret was awesome.
Wow, that qualifies for sure.
Poor Stephanie 😆 I personally think it’s great when pets have human names haha
look up what h.p. lovecraft named his cat
“Why don’t you just tell us you lazy piece of…OH.”
yeah i would’ve said it if it wasn’t so awful, apparently he named it that when he was 9
Adolf, Lenin, SweeyPussy, Dessert.
My neighbor has 2 dogs named Reagan and Kennedy. We came reeeaaal close to naming our dog Gorbechov.

My aunt has a cat named “Rachel”
Rachel isn’t really cute or endearing on its own and doesn’t really shorten well. So they just call their cat “Rach”.
I feel like that’s a name they wanted to give a child, but missed out, so it went to a cat.
My 13 y/o cat is named Sarah, she’s a sweetie and the name fits her. Though super long names for pets are odd to me
Old picture, but have some cat tax
Many long and happy years ahead, Sarah!
Naming your cat Paul
PAUL! THAT’S A PERSON’S NAME!
Anyone else come in here thinking they were going to see things like “honey,” or “snookums?”
Yeah I think the name Stephanie is funny, not gross. It isn’t as catchy or easy to make short and curt though, but it actually is, “Steph” works ok.
@UtMan1988 Staph aureus the cat
Any name you can’t yell from a car while driving slowly around a neighborhood. Odds are your pet will get lost at least once in its life.
