The popular messaging app Signal is currently experiencing server issues as reported by multiple user on X (formerly Twitter) and multiple sites such as downdetector.com .
So far no statement from Signal themselves, and their status website https://status.signal.org reports “Signal is up and running”
✗ Signal is experiencing technical difficulties. We are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible.
Status page now.
Seems like everything is back to normal, at least from what I can tell on my end and a lot of other users’ reports.
Facebook engineers got mad they went down and decided to ddos the internet so they wouldn’t look bad.
Probably due to users trying to grab their username.
I don’t know… Usernames are paired with numbers, so they shouldn’t be all that exclusive and hence it shouldn’t trigger an avalanche of people rushing to get the username they desire.
They are paired and, I think, exclusive (albeit with random numbers attached at the end so maybe meh).
Who knows… session seems interesting.
I thought the goal of the username was to also have the ability to use Signal without any phone number at all
Nope, you still need a phone number. You just don’t need to give the phone number out to contacts you want to talk with and can instead use the username.
Ah yes, I see that now by ready the blog post more carefully.
I was having A LOT of issues with it earlier this evening but it seems to be back to normal now
They still have issues registering new users. There’s a recaptcha loop problem.
Maybe signal should allow federation but they dont like that idea.
I’d prefer if my private messages wouldn’t be made public, thank you.
Sure, they are end to end encrypted, but giving everyone access to them is still dangerous.
A message would not be going to everyone it would exist on your homeserver and the homeserver of whoever your messaging. Second your private messages would not be public u said it yourself its called encryption if u dont trust the encryption no point using signal in the first place. Third even if it made everything public the only meta data would be that u received a mesaage from someone at time xyz (not who just someone) look at sealed sender for more info on this.
