I have recently started using fediverse apps, mostly lemmy and mastodon. So far Lemmy is the only one I use the most and kind of understand.
On mastodon, i mostly follow news accounts (likely bots). Toots in my feed rarely have any comments.
I have been using matrix for messaging long before i have started using other apps in the fediverse.
A few days ago I learned about Misskey and Calckey (idk the difference between them) and would like to try those out, but I’m kind of feeling overwhelmed by all these different apps different instances and whatnot.
Also i get the impression that there is this issue where some posts in one app is displayed very differently in another app.
So is there a way to use any one of these apps (Calckey or misskey for example) and get all my social needs done (including messaging) ?
I apologize, if I’m not being clear.
Misskey, Calckey, Pleroma, Mastodon- All perform the same essential function. Microblogging (with minor differences e.g Pleroma has a 5000 word limit per post) Think Twitter.
Pixelfed is an image sharing platform - Think Instagram.
Friendica will give you a similar experience to Facebook (Macroblogging)
None of those platforms have real messaging (Direct messages, but not private or encrypted)
Okay. So although all the apps support activitypub - only similar apps can replace each other ( like mastodon with calckey)
Apps with different feature sets will have to remain seperate, but will allow following users from different apps (lemmy and mastodon for instance).
Basically there is no single app that can do everything (as of now)
This is idea that i get after reading through the comments. Please correct me if i’m wrong
I think you more or less have it. Rather than saying no app can do everything, I’d probably frame it as different apps being optimized for different things. An app that tried to offer an optimized experience for everything is going to end up feeling like a bunch of apps bodged together anyway (basically like meta) because community stuff wants to looks different than microblogging stuff which wants to look different from photosharing stuff.
There’s some I haven’t used, but Kbin will do Mastodon-style microblogging and Lemmy-style threads, so that’s the best of both worlds. I don’t think the private messaging function works on it yet though.
No mobile app (yet) unfortunately.
I’m replying to you right now from the Artemis app beta!
There’s no public release as of yet though.
There is not a public release just yet, but just yesterday Artemis tripled or quadrupled the amount of people they onboarded! Scaling up very quickly.

The site works well enough on mobile, so it is usable without an app.
That said, I prefer to use a native app, or a well-designed webapp like wefwef.
Pwa works just like an app… A bit too well. Would prefer still having some features of web browsers sometimes.
I am using connect right now and I am enjoying it. I think staying with one app for a while and learning all it’s features might lead to a better experience.
I use wefwef As long as you do not use threads, you are good to go
Liftoff for lemmy. Easy to use and ready to download (right now) on the Play Store.
I’m using Memmy for Lemmy on IOS. Works quite well and the first to have an official app for IOS/Lemmy.
I sort if have the same confusion. The more services pop up, the ore overwhelming it’s going to get for your average user.
