We are hot on the heels of the second member of Ars’s retinue. Seeing the early part of this story again after reading quite a bit of the manga really gives me some perspective on this story and the characters. I am going to put the rest of my spiel about this behind a spoiler tag, but it isn’t super spoilery other than broad strokes that are already apparent in this episode. However, feel free to skip over it if you so choose.
Rant about Ars with mild spoilers
Something I have written about before for this series is that the cast of characters is interesting…except Ars. He manages to build this superstar team of prodigies around him and somehow magically inspires their utmost loyalty. If you actually take a step back and ask yourself what about Ars inspires such loyalty…there isn’t much.
Each member of his group will follow the same basic pattern: he shows them one act of kindness or talks about his ideals in some way to show he isn’t like the other nobles…and that’s it. Sure, he is nice to them and treats them well, but he isn’t the only one doing that. At this point in the story, Rietz is already highly respected by everybody for his martial prowess, he doesn’t need Ars’s patronage to lead a prosperous and successful life. He has managed to, through his actions, overcome the racial stereotyping that had kept him in poverty before meeting Ars.
Meanwhile, Ars, despite being the noble that has been studying books since he could talk thanks to isekai knowledge, is now being lectured on his own country’s history by Rietz. I think that if Ars was given moments to shine or talents of his own, this kind of loyalty given to him would make more sense. Anyways, end rant…
To summarize the rant above in a spoiler-free way: I really like the characters in this show other than Ars. That includes liking the focus of this episode, Charlotte. One thing I really appreciate about her in this episode is that her mistrust and even hatred of nobility makes total sense! Her whole life has been a struggle for survival, of course she would hate a noble that hasn’t known any of the hardships she has had to face. I had thought I recognized the VA for Charlotte, but looking on AniList, I haven’t watched anything else she has done. I really liked Charlotte’s voice in this episode.
As for a screenshot this episode, I thought it was quite funny when Rietz got a bit philosophical about economics with this line (@rikka@ani.social):
This episode really eased a lot of my worries regarding the show’s political leanings. Charlotte said most of what I’d been thinking, and Ars seems to be learning and growing from her perspective.
Unrelated, but Rietz is a good boy and i like him very much.
This has the potential to be my favorite new anime this season!
