Neptune Frost is a one-of-a-kind movie. It’s weird, cryptic, experimental, beautiful, and honestly just a unique experience. It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s a movie I won’t easily forget.
Oh, it’s also about being trans hackers. And about dying in the cobalt mines.

And yeah Inside Man isn’t particularly deep or political, it’s just the kind of movie that’s fun on every rewatch for me.
I’m afraid I don’t have much I can recommend, I had pretty much the same reaction as you with the writing I found both by and about him. Most of what I know about his philosophy is from either school or or other media that references him. I remember reading a good essay by the Wu Ming collective that talked about Gramsci, but I can’t find it right now and idk if it there was a translation. If I manage to find it I’ll let you know.
Unrelated to Gramsci, but Wu Ming wrote some great historical novels with an impressive amount of research behind them and an explicitly leftist perspective. Some good non-fiction commentary about Italian/European recent history as well. It’s not all good, they have some bad takes here and there (don’t read Clockwork Orange Duck), but I like most of their stuff. I’m reading Proletkult right now and even though I have mixed feelings about it it’s still an interesting book. Most of their best work is translated.

About Money Heist, oof. I only watched the first season and a while ago too. I remember being kinda unimpressed because I felt like a lot of the plot conceits were pretty directly lifted from Inside Man, one of my favorite movies. The political content seemed pretty surface level to me back then, at least that’s what I remember, but I might have missed stuff. Definitely interested in the documentary about it’s impact though, that stuff is right up my alley as you can tell.

I would usually agree with you about the Treat Entryism. I’m not an ideological purist and I actually like “cultural remixes” in a general sense: pieces of media that reuse and recontextualise older cultural artifacts in a modern form. Bella Ciao though is the one cultural product I become conservative about, in my head it has too much significance to hear it taken out of context without cringing.
I have so much love for that Burmese Bella Ciao cover… I think I actually heard it first a while ago after the It Could Happen Here podcast series on Myanmar sent me down a bunch of rabbit holes. It has the energy and cultural context that this song actually should have, fuck all the Netflix TV show co-opted EDM remixes that people know Bella Ciao for these days. Thanks for bringing this specific memory back.

So far most of the stuff I’ve checked out is not exactly up my alley, but some of it surprised me in a great way. The beat from It Burns for example is great, love that mangled bassline!

It drives me nuts that the plot of the new season sucks as much as it does, because it’s also one of the best looking shows I’ve seen in a while. The battle scenes are genuinely pure cocaine and I want them injected straight into my veins. I - unfortunately - had a great time watching it.
But the plotline, the ending especially, isn’t just lib. It’s straight up fash. Two seasons of a revolutionary civil war of an oppressed population against their elite get resolved by… uniting against a common external enemy? That’s the plot arc of fascist Italy in the '20s. Or Weimar Germany.
Apparently the government is using the excuse of the current emergency situation to ban a much larger protest scheduled in Utrecht against cuts to university funding. I think the fascist hooligans were too macho to get their asses beat intentionally, but stirring shit up sure was convenient.

Awesome writeup. I knew the whole ST suite is used in loads of mainstream tracks, but I didn’t know those specific examples. I’ve long had the feeling that 10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄ by Bon Iver also uses it for the fucked up drums, although don’t quote me on it.
And yeah, Decapitator specifically has a character to its sound that I just haven’t found in any other plugin. In techno I would throw it on almost any channel on a low setting just to add a little bite to stuff. It also sounds good at almost any setting, from barely noticeable warmth to completely mangling sounds. I really like others in the suite too, for specific needs, but that one is the only really unreplaceable one.
If you could help me get my hands on a good crack I’d be eternally grateful, but otherwise no stress.
Switched to a Mac recently and I cannot find a working crack of the Soundtoys suite for it, I am devastated. Decapitator was one of my most used plugins…
