The kernel depends on the hardware. Trying to get hardware with mainline kernel support is hard and expensive. Mainlining isn’t the trivial task you make it out to be, otherwise postmarket would not struggle that much. Or tell me which device just works with postmarket OS?
Sailfish OS can work with mainline Linux kernels, it has been ported to the Pine Phone for example.
Sailfish OS can run on mainline kernel. The Jolla Phone does not run a mainline kernel because it consists of off the shelf phone components and those are for Android phones outside of the world of iOS.
Mainlining is anything but easy if you aim is a functioning daily driver and not a tinker project, especially in a team as small as Jolla’s with so many more urgent tasks.
PS: Angelfish runs just fine on my Jolla Phone.
I find it impressive how negative people tend to be because something is not pure enough, they talk it down even much more than the duopoly systems. Yes, Sailfish OS has some closed source UI parts, and you can’t just install desktop programs outside of the cli without running into problems. But running desktop programs, not optimised for mobile use are a terrible experience to begin with. This is a mobile device, not a desktop. If you disagree with that and want a desktop on your phone, there are options for you too, Sailfish OS isn’t it though.
That said, what surprised me most is how much I am in the terminal on the phone and enjoying it. You’d certainly not going to have that kind of experience on an Android, also not on a degoogled one.
What is so bad about the repairability of the Jolla Phone? You can have a look at the teardown on ifixit. Seems pretty straight forward and modular. Sure, Fairphone is yet better, not so much because it is so much easier to take apart but because of how extensive their replacement part store is.
Then get a Fairphone, that said, most of the people who have purchased the Jolla Phone have gotten 256 GB for 500-580 EUR. I personally got it for 580 EUR.

There is no lock in, there are merely incompatibilities. You can install sudo, but by default there is devel-su which is pretty much the same thing. You can install rpms and if you don’t like pkcon you can install zypper as package manager. As long as you stay within the terminal emulator things tend to work.
There is a misunderstanding that desktop programs would be such a great boon for a mobile phone. But mobile phones suck with desktop UI. You need a mobile UI for it to make sense and that is exactly where incompatibilities are coming from.
I installed a community port of the qt6 based KDE plasma browser Angelfish for example and it is running just fine on Sailfish OS.
That is not bypassing this regulation, it is the regulation working as intended. Increasing exposure of these companies to tge EU market with own logistics etc to create more lecerage fir enforcing other product regulations.
Who knows. It is certainly low volume but some who buy it with wrong expectations might bring it to the used market very soon, at least in certain numbers. The question is how much demand will be there, possibly more than supply.
The bootloader is locked by default. I am not sure if “verified boot” is something different from that. In developer mode the boot loader can be unlocked.
No, I would not even take one even if they paid me the current price. The thing is not street legal in the EU, therefore useless. The reasons that it is not street legal have nothing to do with Elon directly but with that vehicle being unjustifiably dangerous to pedestrians and other drivers as well. If you drive one of those it tells all the others how much you care about everyone that isn’t you.

I never built up a CD collection but I now started a digital DRM free local collection. Yes, I am actually buying that stuff (call me stupid if you like) but only loss free.
One of the few disks I own is sadly too corruoted for error free ripping, luckuly I still have it as mp3. That album simply does not wxist online anymore, anywhere. Possibly not even in the darker corners of the net. I think that happens more often than many believe.

I am using Angelfish, the Firefox based Plasma Mobile browser on Sailfish OS. It works quite well there.
The car share can be replaced with self driving cars, however if you make self driving cars more attractive than cars now, you’ll shift the balance and are heading towards more car centric and therefore more hostile and less attractive places again.
It is a nice fairy tale hat self driving cars are more space efficient. Real service patterns have shown that they fill up road infrastructure more than regular cars as they will do either fill up trips or need to drive everything twice. Also, making use of these fancy advantages (higher speeds, shorter breaking distance, dynamic crissings without traffic lights) make roads much more pedstrian hostile, more highway like.
Name me a concrete phone model that has no significant compromises in hardware functionality. Maybe I missed those when I had a look into it.
The Postmarket wiki only shows a handful of devices where Call functionality is classified with “Yes”, rather than “Partial” or even “No”. Other than Pine Phone and Purism Librem that is only the Shift6mq from 2020 and four Xiaomi devices with the newest one being also from 2020, all of those have core functionality that does not fully work. Maybe that wiki is horrendously out of date but then this doesn’t do good service to give newcomers a good idea where the project stands.
BTW: I am not saying btw that postmarket isn’t interesting nonetheless to many people and a great project.
