  • imminent_nebula@lemmy.ca I would personally avoid anything that is app reliant. Companies in general have been absolute dogshit about supporting their companion apps over the years. If you’re looking for a telescope with a go-to system, find one that isn’t app based.

Also, I would start looking at the second hand market before looking at a new scope. There is a surprising number of people out there who buy a scope, use it once, and then box it up and eventually sell. You can get really good deals on good-as-new second hand equipment.

The thing you really want to look for is a telescope with a motorized mount. The sky moves fast under motorization. In the span of a minute, whatever you’re looking at can move out of view. Go-to systems are convenient and all, and are motorized, but if you ever want to learn to use celestial coordinate systems, a computerized auto-slew system will get in the way (source: MSc in astronomy, have been an operator at multiple public observatories across Canada; I have no internalized concept of right ascension or declination, because these have all been computerized systems. But if you don’t care about learning coordinate systems, a used go-to scope with no app is the best bang for your buck.

  • scmstr@lemmy.blahaj.zone If only. He seemed to have no idea that it was a inappropriate.

I had only found out about the history between the GM and the player after the previous session, where I noticed the GM being kind of weird towards this player. It turns out, he was being weird because he had just learned that she started dating this other guy at our table.

I got brought up to speed after that session – including the fact that the player had asked others to not intervene, and to just let her handle it – and then got the front seat experience for the… well, the thing.

The campaign did not survive long after that session.

  • Heydo That’s true, but we also don’t measure galaxy rotation by watching things move. The rotation rate of galaxies is incredibly slow on human timescales. Like, the Milky Way rotates once every 100,000 - 150,000 years.

Instead, we’re looking at differences in redshift from one side of the galaxy compared to the other. A rotating object – assuming it’s axis of rotation isn’t perfectly facing you (i.e. you’re looking straight down its north/south pole) – always has one side that’s moving toward you, and another that is moving away from you. The side that is moving toward you will be slightly blueshifted compared to the average, while the side that is moving away will be slightly redshifted. Finding a galaxy that isn’t rotating means finding a galaxy that doesn’t have this red/blue shift pattern.

  • INeedMana This all reflects the constant handwringing I see on the PF2e subreddit over that game. All discussion is optimization discussion, and all discussion is complaining about the direct effects of optimization. Or – because bonus inflation is highly controlled in that system – they’re complaining about how it’s so unfair that the game doesn’t let you just break it, the way 3.x, 5.x, or PF1e does.

Players want to break the game, but then find the results of that confusing and angry making.
