LGBTQ Ukrainians are between a rock and a hard place now. For all the governmental posturing about how progressive it is, very little actual progress has been made, and its being curbed by nazis at every step. Still, the LGBTQ community staunchly supports the current nazi government like a good liberals they are.
It’s worth noting that the book Joker grows out of his obedience to the empire and gets to know and relate to the people he has come to Vietnam to kill. The movie doesn’t explore the second book of the duology (despite borrowing some imagery from it), where the consequences of serving the empire come back to bite Joker in the ass and, ostensibly, make him a better person.
All in all, I like the books a whole lot better.
It’s a really interesting time period, and it’s such a shame that the game turned out to be an utter garbage.
Well, there are some anti-communist tones in the portrayal of the game’s setting, but ultimately neither the characters nor the game itself doesn’t have much to say about the politics. Its themes are much more personal, and the politics are mentioned only in passing. The DDR aesthetic is a set dressing.
But it does fuck.
Edit: I should also mention that the aesthetics at least partly come from the 1970s DDR sci-fi flick “Signale”, which I didn’t watch. Maybe they’re just the authors channeling their childhoods?
Signalis
Signalis very quickly became one of my favourite games of all times. In the end it turned out less anti-communist than I initially feared, mostly due to it’s story being not really about politics.
I definitely simp for the space DDR though.
The indie sector is also keeping it mostly lean. No other game has made me cry like Signalis did, and it’s less than a gig.
It’s been proven time and time again, if it’s possible for fascists to ignore the satirical aspects of the media that criticises them, they’ll happily do so. They’ll appropriate the satire that makes them look scary, violent or insane. The only surefire way to avoid that is to make them look stupid and ridiculous.
As soon as I finally move to Russia and settle down, I’m planning on taking the trip there with my SO. It’s going to be great.
Well, insects are arthropods. I think they’re fascinating creatures, and they are far from mindless biorobots, but… Yeah, it’d be a lot better than industrial farming of mammals and birds.
They believe that the good guys always win, and they also believe themselves to always be the good guys. Hence the mental gymnastics.

Don’t be sorry, comrade! It’s an interesting perspective, and I agree with you. We don’t usually think of languages that way (well, at least I don’t), but it’s a valid and valuable approach.
I wouldn’t call Ukrainian a dialect of Russian. They are somewhat mutually intelligible, the degree of this heavily depends on the regional variation of Ukrainian, the further west you go, the less it is. I think there’s enough differences for it to be its own language.
It’s quite beautiful, actually, and it’s a shame that the sound of it makes me want to vomit nowadays.
