Yes their father is a strange fellow. I actually bought Entangled Life mainly because Cosmo made a short theme song using mushroom generated sounds for the book.

11·2 天前It was only a matter of time. Enlightened centrist Brodie Robertson is now rubbing shoulders with DHH on his podcast. I guess after making nice with the likes of Andreas Kling, Vaxry and Lunduke it was only a small step to invite DHH as well.
No, I’m not touching fashware.
Guess what the political beliefs of the simplex founder are…

15·4 天前Notice how its always the little guy that has to just accept things and be “reasonable” while fascist tech oligarchs can just do what they want. How dare I be dogmatic about something that is actively ruining my live and not buying the books by people actively furthering the cause of those oligarchs.

319·4 天前No, and I have no plans on doing so based on the arguments outlined by the initial post. Arguing that search engines and AI systems are even remotely similar is a false equivalency and doesn’t really make me hopeful that the rest of their book is worth reading. I don’t really want to know what kind of mental gymnastics are necessary to come to that conclusion, but it probably involves talking to a chatbot for copious amounts of time.
Just for the slow kids in the back of the class. Search engines surface my work to a larger audience. They make it discoverable. I can use this audience to generate an income for myself. This is a fair deal. AI systems take my work without compensation, create a lossy compilation of multiple other works and sell it back to that audience while leaving me with nothing. Fuck anyone who calls that “fair use”.

930·4 天前Cory Doctorow has no credibility in regards to AI ever since he called opposition to AI “purity testing” among other strawman arguments. All the former “good guys”, the EFF, Cory Doctorow, Linus Torvalds, even fucking Debian (who once shipped a renamed version of Firefox because of potential copyright issues) are one after the other showing their true colours. Meanwhile the fascist creators of AI models openly state that they want to push the very people who created the work they copied to “train” their product, out of the market. This is one of the reasons we even have copyright. Call it tilted towards media all you want, they don’t just get to decide that it no longer matters now that it is inconvenient to the tech oligarchy.

7·10 天前I really don’t get that angle by the original poster. Plenty of people who are firmly in their worker category are genuinely awful people who vote against their collective interests as if it where their religion.

4·10 天前I don’t really agree with the second part, but the first part rings true. It seems to me that most software devs are arrogant assholes who think they are the shit because they know some javascript. As it stands now, I would have to think for a long time about whether I consider the collective work of my profession in the last few years a net positive for the world.

45·11 天前You mean the work that that nobody is forcing them to do? The one they do by their own choice while not asking consent and respecting the wishes of others? Yep those devs sound pretty fucking scummy to me.

Linux@programming.dev•Debian Votes To Allow "Responsible Use Of Generative AI"
2213·11 天前This email from 2016 by jwz springs to mind.
I guess you want Debian to be the kind of operation that uses the work of others while blatantly and explicitly ignoring the wishes of the person who did the actual creative work.
I am increasingly of the opinion that all software developers and adjacent people are fucking scum unless proven otherwise.

“Mathematicians solved prestigious problem and Codex helped” would have been great propaganda for OpenAI, but they managed to make an easy win into a PR disaster. Instead the message researchers around the world take away is probably: “Don’t use Codex it steals your research data and OpenAI will publish it as their own”.
