  • Without even getting into how capitalism managed set the planet on fire within two centuries, the center of capitalism has zero incentive to solve any of this, as doing so would mean giving up on the wealth extraction that provides them with their comfortable lifestyle (and power, and much more) in the first place

The only viable way out I see:

    1. Peripheral countries (LatAm, Africa, South East Asia, etc.) form a strong coallition
    2. Immediate statization of natural resources (water, minerals, crops, meat, oil, etc.)
    3. Completely withhold said resources
    4. As a condition for trading said resources, demand billions to trillions in investments from central countries in clean energy, as well as urban infrastructure, no questions asked, with complete transfer of expertise. No promises: only ever provide any amount of resources after concrete investments
    5. Either heavily regulate or outright ban any use of fossil fuels and oil derivates. Each oil trade has to have an express and justifiable destination (e.g.: maybe you need plastic for some kind of medical equipment)

As we approach a more multi-polar world, this becomes becomes ever more likely. There’s absolutely no way in hell we’ll curb global warming otherwise. The center of capitalism will never do anything concrete about it on its own, so the periphery will have to blackmail them into doing anything. This of course won’t be taken lightly, which is why a global coallition against the center of capitalism is necessary.
