Hey, if we have/had politicians who believe Australian law beats mathematics, what makes you think geophysics are safe?

My first thought was, how do you work at a company with literal toddlers at management level and above and expect it to end well? I just started at a job where my boss is planning on slowing down and stepping back. A key part of getting the job was a willingness to work independently and with little to no direct supervision.

But then my boss is in touch with his business and aware of what’s happening without having to actively spy on us. Also finding he loathes progress reports for the sake of progress reports. I’m still adjusting to no longer being actively micromanaged but it’s clear that I need to check in when something is too much for me or when it’s finished, anything else is wasting time.

How typical is it that we would start looking at standing these data centers up now they are running up against regulatory resistance in more progressive parts of the world.

Its worse than that, if they were to do a Microsoft or Sony and sell it at a loss to try and make money back on the games, then what would happen when they sell through the batch they currently have of presumably pre “BiBi and Donnys special visit to Iran” costed units, then what?

Suddenly all the other components are spiking in price, the pcbs and the plastic cost more, the packaging is more expensive, and they are forced to raise their prices. The sound of screeching from the terminally online intensifies as a bunch of “experts” declare that Valve can afford to lose money because Gabe isn’t walking around in a barrel Diogenes style.

As a software company in the hardware industry Valve are a lot further down the chain than the bigger names, they aren’t securing super long term contracts with anyone. They don’t dictate terms. I doubt they are making a ton of money on any of their hardware, they are just trying to nudge the market in the right direction. We are going to see so many knock off steam machines in the next few years, Microsoft will keep releasing targetted versions of Windows to try to smother SteamOS, its a great time for the rest of the gaming ecosystem while AI fucks the hardware side.

Once the US economy craters into the recession it should by all rights currently be working through… Oh I am sure at that point there will be all sorts of companies dumping all sorts of things into every market they can to try to survive.

The AI bubble bursting will fuck the world in ways that will take decades to unfuck. If sanity was even slightly fashionable right now governments around the world, especially the US would be using every power they had to put some limits on this whole mess. Regulation, taxation, environmental controls everything would be on the table.

Instead we seem to be racing at the wall as fast as we can with NVidia and co in the driving seat, and governments around the world in the passenger seat screaming “Go! Go! Go!”

That’s OK though, economic turmoil is felt by the individual based on their starting wealth. The rich often manage to become wealthier, it’s the poor who get buried. Yay capitalism.

Our sense of morals are adaptive and mutable, for good and ill. I have definitely done dumb stuff without thinking in the past, I have done the wrong thing with the best and worst of intentions, I try to learn from it and become a better person.

Also, I do not have some paternal permission slip of a god who will absolve me of my wrong doings, I have to live with everything I do, good and bad, it’s a pretty powerful incentive to do better and to seek professional help when needed.

I hope I got across I wasn’t trying to be critical. Just curious. And I find the actual homophobes so painfully tedious to talk to that I generally just don’t any more. I can’t imagine how bad it must be for LGBTQ people who have those opinions smashed round their heads at every turn. Have a nice day.

I’m curious, why would the gay shi be a problem? I am straight and I remember when I read “A Land Fit for Heroes” I just kinda read it, but there was all this public discourse about how “The Gays don’t belong in Fantasy”, which first of all LOL. Secondly I have never had an issue with the portrayal of people who are different than myself. The protagonist of a piece of media having a different sexuality to me makes about as much difference as them having a different gender, or skin colour, or handedness, or hair colour, or taste in music. So I am just curious why that was a point that needed pointing out?

Not accusing you of putting any sort of spin on that BTW. Just genuinely curious why something I believe is a fairly minor part of the plot (haven’t played it, just listened to a bunch of online gamer screeching) was something you felt warranted disclosure?

What I am curious about is why this should be a negative for anyone, devs who want to use AI get an easy way to filter out the people who will kick back against it, the people who will kick back against it get a quieter existence, Lemmy should be happy.

I keep seeing how having to categorise will provide a perverse incentive to not disclose and I guess I don’t understand why that would be the case.

It’s not like they are tricking people into buying these free programs, it’s not like they are soliciting contributions from other devs (they have an AI for that), and its not like there is some sort of score being kept (besides earning some sort of credibility on Github as a pro-AI developer through that star thing I guess).

So what would be the motivation to try to trick the community into embracing these sorts of projects? Open and enthusiastic disclosure and a community push to simply move on if you find that style of development distasteful would work better for everyone.

I have walked away from using a project that was developed with AI and I didn’t feel the need to slam the developer for it, I just moved on. They didn’t betray my trust because they don’t owe me anything, and I didn’t unfairly judge their work because I don’t owe them anything. Everyone’s a winner.

But that’s just my humble opinion.

So I wonder if the pay is better in the Right Wing grifterverse… I mean if he wanted d out of any contracts with Nine, so he could do a hard pivot into that media realm this was guaranteed to get that result. It’s not going to hurt him with the type of person who was always going to follow him / One Nation voters. The only people this will turn off are the terminally uninformed who think he is some sort of impartial centrist, surely a vanishingly small number of people who were only ever going to passively watch him on breakfast TV.

Its almost like they use a complicated model to determine the price based on what the market will bear rather than set a price based upon a certain percentage of profit against cost pricing and some countries embrace the cult regardless of the cost. You could almost view Apples pricing in a given market as a measure of the pragmatism and rationality of the local consumer base.

Worldwide the prices are likely to go up as the data centres they use to provide these tangible benefits have to compete with AI data centres for resources. It will be interesting to see if price rises are applied evenly or if they use some of the more profitable whales to subsidise the areas where the consumer base is more sceptical.

I also wonder if theres going to be a golden age of snapping up unused capacity when the AI bubble bursts and all these speculative data centres that are being built before the demand eventuates get desperate to stay afloat.

Have you tried any Australians, specifically Tasmanians. I have a half dozen names I could throw out but not sure how far out of Australia they have name recognition. Well besides the Springbay but that’s nowhere near the price range these days.

Oh no the shine has worn off for people with the smallest hint of principal. So wouldn’t addressing the underlying social conditions be an even more effective way of combating these problems? Adequate support and resources for neuro divergant at risk kids, better social safeguards, diversion and engagement for early intervention of kids showing warning signs. Instead of working with big tech, they could properly regulate and tax them and use the windfall to properly fund schools to maybe provide these kids some hope for the future.

Oh but then they wouldn’t get a surveillance apparatus they can use to monitor every moment their citizens spend online. Plus they wouldn’t be able to retire from public service to well paid consultancies for the big tech companies they have enriched… Silly me.

Many years ago I worked with some people in the telco space who worked on mobile phone towers. One poor guy kept repairing a tower that was repeatedly vandalised by Anti-5G “activists”. The tower wasn’t even set up for 5G. To convince anyone who would listen that the 5G was dangerous they were poisoning random trees around the tower. He got spat on by a looney that hissed at him about “Killing babies”.

There are just nutters out there who want to drag the world backwards to some halcyon day of yore (that never existed) and who refuse to let science, facts, or actual common sense (not the perverted pseudo masterbatory fantasy they try to pass off as common sense) get in the way of the narrative they have concocted, or been fed by grifters.

The last one I had the misfortune of discussing renewables with brought up the Spotlight piece on renewables. I went away and researched it, caught up with him a week later and started giving him some facts around the piece, he had genuinely forgotted he brought it up and then responded to my fact checks with “Oh I don’t care about any of that, just thought the wind turbines look ugly and the construction site looks pretty rough.” He also told me Howard was easily the best PM Australia has ever had and that Labor hasn’t delivered a single budget surplus only the Liberals are able to do that. Suffice to say I just refuse to talk politics with someone that terminally uninformed and uninterested.
