This is the big revelation of mine this year. Grabbed a better phone than I would have (secondhand- used phone market in my area is great) and picked up a Gamesir G8 Plus USBC.

Threw on every emulator (including switch) imaginable (I haven’t tried PS3 but really should) and a curated list of games I like/games I’ve heard good things about and I’ve got handheld gaming back!

I do recommend 2 things in particular:

1. Don’t cheap out on the controller (if possible) and ideally get one with a physical connection because bluetooth-related input latency was a deal-breaker for me
2. Get one of the controllers like I did that snap onto the sides of the phone. I tried a traditional controller + phone mount and did not like the weight balancing at all

You should possibly make this its own post because it’s interesting enough to be much more broadly discussed.

Removing my analysis here because the deal is too complicated for me to want to try to explain. The shortest version is poorly risk-assessed junk debt pools are being wrapped by insurance companies and sold to other investors as a way to both obfuscate the actual degree of the underlying debts risk have and reduce the risk to existing private lenders should economic downturn occur resulting in bankruptcy settlements which cause the asset (the sold debts) to be settled for less than expected market value. The insurance company wrapping also seeks to sidestep existing regulatory rules that were made in response to the 08 crash by making the regulatory risk assessment boundaries harder to analyze through the obfuscation (which results in systemic riskier-than-regulatarily-allowed but potentially more lucrative investmemt returns for institutional investors AND reduced risk for existing private credit firms (freeing up capital for additional lending/their own debt servicing) should line never go down).

The insurance company wrapping adds an additional layer of explosiveness should economic downturn occur that causes the insurance companies investor risk to falter and then downstream affect every packaged debt asset that their CDO-like financial instrument wrapping covers.

Please read the article- it’s dense but I think I have a decent understanding from it. Someone more capable than me please explain the additional layer of the insurance wrapping and how these wrapped CDOs vary from the subprime mortgage crisis implosion if you have the time please.

Generally great idea, but the screen size invalidates it for me. Hope they’re successful enough to launch a 2nd round with a 6"+ screen

Lemmy development being principally led by explicit communists should help a lot too. I do imagine that instances more aligned with the western spy states will have issues eventually, but hopefully their users will migrate to less censored places over time.

Now if the full western firewall gets created that’s gonna be rough for users. I don’t envy VPNs who are actually privacy-focused trying to breach that.

Lost Planet 2 also has a benchmark and may be playable. It’s my favorite in the series.

Preparing for steam nextfest this upcoming week by looking through early release demos. I’ll update here with what was enjoyable and also post in next week’s thread. Drop games as replies if you have the time and found something interesting.

Update:

SPRAWL Zero is a high-intensity fps that’s centered around constantly having to pick up (from a distance with your gravity hand) weapons/physics objects and chucking them at enemies.

ROLLA is you playing katamari except you’re a giant flesh ball that has to roll over humans to increase your flesh mass to destroy the city. Getting shot/flame-throwered/air-strikes decreases your mass until you die. Has leaderboards and seems like a good quick mindless arcade romp

Kaido Genkai is an anime-aesthetic open world racing game with realisticish physics set in a fictional Japanese countryside village. Missions vary from simple races, timed deliveries, and even some environmental retrieval missions. Seems cool- still need to play some more to better form an opinion.

BioEden is habitat/world restoration settlement sim where you’re creating environments for extinct fantasy creatures inside a biodome and terraforming/recycling resources from the dilapidated outside world to support it

Normal Golf Game is a golf game designed by someone who thought QWOP was too easy. I actually think this is phenomenal.

Burn-9: A metal gear-like where you play as the operator directing the agent where to go in the mission while taking calls from various other people during the mission. Short demo and potentially very cool.

Rivage is a first-person environmental story puzzle game set on a space station. You have to dig through documents, learn how to operate various sections of the base, and piece together what has happened to progress through the game. I’ve just unlocked room 3 of ??? before needing to hop off, but this one has me extremely intrigued so far.

Check out 3DS, GameCube, and Wii emulation with side-by-side 3d toggled on in the emulator settings. Azahar would be the 3DS emulator, and Dolphin is GC + Wii (and actually all 3D games on the WiiVC as well)

3D movies are also best experienced in VR in full SBS mode.
