Yeah, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be treated exactly like cigarettes.
From October that’ll pretty much be the case, except only purchasable at a pharmacy. I can’t see why they shouldn’t be sold at servos, etc., but I don’t think it’s a massive problem in terms of personal freedoms. It’ll give pharmacies a cash boost, and maybe even cause expansion of their opening hours in some cases, which could be helpful.
In any case, I think that the deal the Greens got is probably the best one Labor were ever going to give.
This is definitely a step in the right direction.
It seems likely, though, that they’ll end up with something like the ‘Super PACs’ (Political Action Committees) they use as a workaround in the US.
Nice to be noticed! Thanks for moderating ♥️
People have already given direct answers, and the indirect answer of ‘set up regular automated backups’ (which everyone should set up right now if they haven’t already), but for the sake of throwing another option out there, people could take a look at ‘trash-cli’: https://github.com/andreafrancia/trash-cli
(P.S. I know OP might not have actually deleted the files with ‘rm’, but this addresses a broadly similar issue.)
I think it’s worth emphasising here: Don’t put it off!
There are millions who can tell you from experience that good intentions count for nothing when it comes to backups.
I’d recommend going and setting up Timeshift right now: https://github.com/linuxmint/timeshift
It’s easy to set up, it takes literally 10 minutes, and if you decide later you want to use something else, you can just uninstall Timeshift and delete its backups. But in the meantime you’ll be protected with backups.
It’s literally the first thing I install on a new system and it’s saved me multiple times from having to do a complete reinstall.
Is that unusual?
I hope they never stop using that picture of the time this idiot turned up wearing the shop uniform. Him and his PR advisors should never live it down 😆
I fucking love Hatari in general.
They went on to collaborate with Palestinian musician Bashar Murad: https://youtube.com/watch?v=Xy84LnL_ghA
Bashar Murad actually competed to represent Iceland this year, but came runner-up.
Well you can ask them if it’s fully remote forever, and then don’t sign a contract unless it also states that.
You can just search for ‘fully remote’ on the job ad sites: https://www.seek.com.au/fully-remote-jobs

Ah, okay, on mine it de-duplicates crossposts in the feed. Thanks for the info!
The government also gets their cut from taxes, and poltical parties from donations, so they are likewise incentivised
I cross-posted it 4 times, within minutes of each other, each on a different instance. Is there something wrong with that?
You wouldn’t, which is exactly why the industry is pushing for a scheme like this.
… but you can guarantee other Instatockers who want their five minutes of fame will be out there collecting whatever they can get their selfish mitts on …
Yeah, but hopefully this has at least made people aware of the law now, enough that this kind of thing will get people reported quickly.
I worry, though, that people might keep an animal secretly until it’s non-rehabitable, at which point they figure they can get away with doing the same thing these people have done.
I don’t know if it’s possible under the law, but swift seizure of the proceeds of crime would go a long way. Probably most people aren’t going to want to go to the hassle of getting licensed, so at least they will be black-and-white in the wrong and it’s doesn’t have to be investigated in detail whether they’re making profit.
I imagine (I’m not a lawyer) that it might be hard to delineate what exactly is commercial gain from the animal, and what is commercial gain from ‘expertise’ or ‘life experience’ of the keeper.
I’ll be interested to see where the book deal goes from here. I expect proceeds will be given to wildlife causes (upkeep of the bird is fair enough), and I’m hoping there will be a HEFTY chapter towards the end about how you should not do what they did.
There’s specific exemptions in these laws for clubs. I’m not a lawyer, but from what I’ve read, I think if they were to do the paperwork to set up the room as a women-only club somehow, they’d be in the clear.
Off-topic, but because a few people have been shocked when I’ve mentioned it lately, just a note that Schwartz Media outlets - including the Saturday Paper - have long been under boycott for their erasure of Palestinian people (the owners are strongly pro-Israel):
The Schwartz Media group has faced accusations of supporting Zionism and Israel, and of avoiding critical discussion of both, as ABC journalist John Lyons has written. Indeed, as Randa Abdel-Fattah has observed, Schwartz Media “has what seems almost a policy position of avoiding coverage of Israel (and not publishing Palestinians, let alone Palestinians critical of Israel)”.
The company is currently under boycott from Palestinian and other writers in solidarity, including many First Nations writers, because of this continued work of erasure. Projects like The Sunday Paper — in contrast to the Schwartz-owned The Saturday Paper — have arisen to highlight this and to build alternative spaces for political discussions around indigeneity and solidarity.
