I have always found following peertube channels from mastodon to be a rough and cumbersome experience, especially since the mastodon clients do not display videos, they need an external browser.

I found that Newpipe can show peertube videos and supports channel membership, with optional notification for new publications. It also shows likes and comments. A very smooth experience.

I guess my initial problem would be solved with peertube redirect, allowing me to open peertube videos from mastodon in Newpipe, but for now I don’t feel I need this further step

I didn’t find a good way to use tge official app: I don’t have a peertube account anywhere, and with a local account I found no way to subscribe to channels.

Another thing that bugs me us that, if I have a link to a peertube video, I can’t use it to open the video in the app: copy pasting it in the search bar doesn’t work!

I cant say i have the same issue. Not saying yours dont exist, but it does sound frustrating!

For me, I have an account with my own server. And the share button on the linked peertube video works pretty well, its how I post onto this community. I signed in with the official android app onto my server and it hooked up no problem. All my subscriptions are there as well as the functionality.

I know some people use peertube.wtf or https://makertube.net/ to sign up and use these as their home servers. Might help?

I thought opening a peertube account as you suggest, but I find it is a bit of a waste to have yet another personal fediverse account, to do something I can theoretically do with a mastodon one,: follow peertube channels, like and comment videos.

I see 2 solutions thst would be right fit

        • a mastodon client that can visualize peertube videos. Fecilab probably can Di that, bu I like Pachli most
        • an app to watch peertube videos that opens when I click a peertube link. In theory “peertube redirect” can do exactly this, but I tried to set it up with newpipe an it didn’t work.

No big deal: with Newpipe subscription and following accounts from mastodon, I can already do what I want without a big fuss 🙂
