*Editor's note: Dr. James Godwin is now a research scientist at MDI Biological Laboratory.* The story begins with the Aztec God of death and lightning, the Xolotl. As legends have it, he was a monstrous dog that guarded the sun god and ushered souls to the underworld every night. One day, as Gods began sacrificing each other for the newly created sun, Xolotl, a master transformer, managed to escape death by turning himself into a salamander. And that creature came to be known as the axolotl. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. It’s because they’re all juvenile though. They actually don’t produce a hormone needed for proper growth and that’s why they look the way they do. They are supposed to go through another stage of growth, and their appearance and existence is because of a genetic birth defect.

So would it be possible to make one grow up by giving them hormones? And what would it look like?

They can force them to change with a shot of iodine and they apparently look like Tiger Salamanders.

Simple. They don’t have to be adults to reproduce. Wasn’t there a pregnant 2 year old girl at some point?

Really cool, but I feel bad for the little guys that are living in tanks and probably getting their limbs cut off for us to study.

They’re very nice to see, I’d breed them for domestic use only.

They can only regenerate certain parts of their brain. So unfortunately, no.

Their arms are not that simpler compared to our arms.
