Cheat codes were such a nice option for games with highly questionable difficulty or progression.
Game Conqueror on Linux, Cheat Engine on Windows, and save states on Virtualbox and emulators.
Mods sometimes another person’s save if playing the final ending requires bunch of collecting I don’t want to do like Arkham Knight.
Mods can be an option but some are harder than others to use. I do find that a lot of mainstream games have a pretty good range of difficulties these days (including story mode etc), but definitely not all games.
Plus one to cheat engine, I don’t have time to grind materials
Mods and trainers.
Yeah, I use remodeling for some single player games. It’s basically cheats for everything
on single player stuff I use cheat engine to skip the grind any time it’s impacting the fun.
I rarely play only online or multi player because no pause is not compatible with kids
I used Cheat Engine on my last playthrough of Borderlands 3 cause no way was I gonna go through that entire slog of leveling up again.
I just wanted to blast some bad guys.
Maybe I should try that. It looks like such a nice series of games but I don’t have time for the grind. I just want to nuke everything and then go to bed.
They are fun and I will say that it’s kinda worth it to play normally at least once, but the games tend to drag a bit sometimes.
I had already played 3 before so I didn’t feel too bad about doing a cheat run.
A lot of newer games have “story mode” or other accessibility options for an easy playthrough.
But yeah I really miss cheat codes, especially the wackier ones.
I miss them too. I would never use a game genie these days, but one of the coolest things I did was with Super Mario Bros. I accidentally put an X instead of a Z at the end of a code that was supposed to make Mario always stay big, but it ended up making Mario always stay small, even with mushrooms or fireballs. My sister and I were elated!

Honestly, I mostly just play a lot of old games that still support consoles, cheat codes, or mods.
I still use cheat-o-matic to this day. When it doesn’t work I try the similar options on cheat engine
I haven’t gamed on Windows in a while, but when I did CheatEngine and WeMod were my goto.
CheatEngine has really good utility outside of cheats in particular. For a time you could unlock the camera on a lot of games to get some really good (or really broken) screenshots. Though for cheating in particular, I think it’s still pretty easy to find a CheatTable for most games.
WeMod is shit now. It used to be free but now they demand you pay them if you play for more than 2 hours.
Wtf, since when?
Couple years now. Old accounts got grandfathered in but if you never made a full account or started using WeMod recently there’s a 2 hour timer that when it expires turns off all the cheats and demands you pay the fee.
Gotta be real, WeMod looks sus af.
I mean, I dug around the one-page site looking for a price for a while, read every line on there, looking for the price I could tell it has, only to find nothing, so I searched it. $7.99 a month, totally hidden. Not looking good.
I use trainers from chest happens mainly. Only because I have a lifetime membership because I bought it decades before they did prescriptions, other then that I use cheat engine.
Or mods that alter the game to make it more accessible and enjoyable
Cheat codes are just low tech micro transactions because they would have a 1-900 number to call for them.
Nah, just bring a pen and paper to the news stand and copy down cheats from “Tips and Tricks” magazine by hand.
Did people actually call those numbers? We couldn’t afford that shit.
