In my opinion we need to support other websites like odysee and peertube. If everyone here continue to watch content on yt we won’t have a real alternative. This is my thought. For me the best alternative right now is odysee and I’m trying to watch only creator there. (If u want a list of content creator I can write it down)

Why is there no piracytube? If anyone watches smth from youtube, they automatically seed them. And it shares videos via p2p. If you wanna support the creator, almost all have patreon or smth.

Lots of people test the alternatives, find they actually really do like the comfort of the YouTube bubble and go back.

Most people are not going to be hard core free speech advocates who will ignore/block what they don’t like.

Any chance of competition requires algorithmic discovery, censorship (to the users biases), and transparency across platforms

Apps like grayjay that pull content from multiple platforms seamlessly is a good first step in making video streaming fungible.

One thing I think is that such platforms are built to manipulate the user into staying with them. Having what feels to be ADHD, I can have several different interests at once, and if they’re done online, it’s always miserable to cycle through sites to check one or two things, and so the interest to check such smaller platforms starts waning.
One thing I have found that helps mitigate the problem is aggregation systems, like RSS readers, Grayjay, NewPipe and the sort.
Maybe tools like those would be a start? Several of Youtube’s alternatives support RSS and are supported by either/both NewPipe and Grayjay (with some overlap and plans to expand from each).
Also if the user is bent on ditching Youtube completely, but doesn’t want to make a hard cut, doing a transition instead, Youtube also has RSS and integration to both players.

I spent better than a month blocking all of the extreme right content and bullshiy on Odyssey. There’s not enough content left to fill 15 minutes of my day

I set up new pipe attached it to Peer tube there’s a couple of people on there that are okay but hardly anything. Completely lacking any form of monitization, peer tube just lacks creators like mad.

Odyssey and rumble are just cesspools, and peer tube is starved for anybody half decent.

Odysee is a nonstarter for me with its lack of moderation, resulting in a lot of right-wing hate filled garbage. Also, their thing with using some virtual currency and paying creators is weird. I want no part of cryptocurrency or “space dollars” or whatever they want to call it. PeerTube is ideal but not enough people are posting to it, which is frustrating. Youtube frontends, like invidious, are our best solution until creators move to something else.

yeah but is the only decent alternative in my opinion. There are several privacy and tech creator. In future maybe will be better. But we need to use alternative to youtube. This is the point. Also if it’s not perfect. Ai is coming to yt!

Odysee’s policies make it unusable. I remember the first video I ever clicked to watch on Odysee was a video titled something like “What I am doing for Pride month.” This video was on the front page at the top. I clicked it and it was some lady preaching about how Pride is evil and perverse and all kinds of hateful rhetoric and how it was ruining our children. I just looked at Odysee again and, months later, I see more of her videos on the front page. Upon exploring Odysee, there is even more of this type of content still freely available to watch. I don’t care which way you lean, hate speech should never be acceptable. It is well known that the platform is a right wing cesspool. Here is a Reddit thread from 5 years ago where people were discussing the same thing, nothing has changed. It is the platform you go to when you are too crazy for YouTube (which is pretty nuts). It is not a viable alternative to YouTube for most people. There doesn’t exist a good alternative, PeerTube being the most promising option at the moment.

I fundamentally disagree. Look at what they are doing now framing Israel criticism as “hate speech”. Either all speech is free speech or none is, because “hate” can be defined as anything. You could easily frame all sorts of speech as “hate” speech against some group.

Now we can have a conversation about the merits of free speech, which is an entirely different beast. But if you are comfortable with limiting speech, you need to necessarily be comfortable with the fact that the same mechanism can and will be used to limit your speech.

Free speech is not all speech. It never has been. People who think everyone should be allowed to say whatever are the same people who just want to say the “N” word and other hateful things without consequences. There should always be consequences for what you say and I don’t care which way it lands ideologically on the subject of free speech, hate speech is wrong, period. It is widely accepted what hate speech is; if you say anything against marginalized groups, you are wrong. If you use religion to justify your hate, you are wrong. If you call for the harm of others, you are wrong. Call it what you want. I am not going to sit here and debate free speech. My point was Odysee is full of the worst kind of people and you should not have to suffer those people because you want an alternative to YouTube.

When it comes to European content, especially the Czech and Slovak ones, there is no alternative in the case of YouTube. Every content creator here is on Meta’s platforms, Reddit, and/or YouTube. So the only way to watch them without ads (I’m supporting some of them via superchats) is to use an AdBlock or an alternative frontend like Tubular.

they’re a part of the solution: yes you’re watching content from youtube, but you’re in no way supporting youtube or its creators financially by doing so.

there’s no difference between using freetube and quitting youtube altogether as far as google is concerned, and it’s a good option for people who want to protest google but don’t want to miss out on content.

100% Especially since Google is cracking down on alternative front ends like freetube and blocking VPN IPs

The hard part will be to convince creators to go to platforms where they don’t get paid

Is self-hosting a YouTube front-end reliable? Public instances often don’t work, but maybe Google doesn’t block private ones?

Yeah, but this defeats the purpose of being anonymous and not sending your habits and IP to facist america, if you are the only one using that instance, it doesn’t give you any anonymity

Then you might just use freetube with local back end

I use a croned service built around yt-dlp and a simple textfile for channels and their options. It saves categorized, correctly cutted, subbed and thumbnailed mkvs for upnp rygel to serve my TVs.

You can find the code here to get started with a usable state:

        https://github.com/krei-se/yt-timeshift

Together with mediathekview this creates distraction free content, you can cron symlink all new stuff into another folder, means you open “Whatsnew” and have all fresh content from last week or two sorted.

So far im pretty pleased as the server is on my roaming homes nfs so can pickup the browser cookies from my workstation easily, manually updating them is not really an option.

I would not use a manually run service or frontend though as the query for new videos is not fast, a single run with 50 channels will easily go an hour just to scrape all video lists.

You also have to experiment a lot with sleep parameters to not trigger their bot detection and should autoupdate yt-dlp through the service.

But since it ran stable it continues to do so for months now.

No moderation. Every time I’ve looked at it it’s been full of alt-right bullshit. The people running it pretty much have to know, so are apparently fine with it. I’m not.

If a vlogger chooses not to post anywhere other than Youtube platform, he should face zero disadvantage? Unless you are literally addicted, why would you facilitate her laziness in not engaging at multiple platforms?

Zero disadvantages? You mean like having to give up your identity to Google? Having to follow an ever increasing number of rules? Having videos demonetized for weeks until the appeal process runs it’s course. Yeah, no disadvantages posting on Youtube.

" … why would you facilitate her laziness … " Because I’m lazy and can’t be bothered to check 10 to 20 video sites per day to see if she posted a new video. The people I follow have an average subs of 5.7 million. What incentive do they have to move to another platform? The small number of people using a frontend isn’t going to make a difference.

How is making a number of accounts on different platforms going to encourage a Youtuber to move?

You don’t need to know creators

Watch on Odysee adon will automatically switch to Odysee if the video is available on both platforms.
    Firefox LINK

PeerTube Companion auto switch to PeerTube
