The point of public transport is people sharing the service. 20 people on a bus is better than 20 people in their own cars and the bus still going the same daily route.
Until the end of the day and the bus still has to keep running, but it has 0-1 passenger. Running a big diesel engine all around the city and it’s mostly empty is not great for the environment.
