Almost every tech platform is designed to grab and hold your attention, to keep you clicking, scrolling, and buying for as long as possible.
Sports gambling has become one of the clearest examples of this. The industry has created frictionless apps on your phone that let you bet on everything from March Madness to a pregame coin toss to who wins a minor league British dart tournament.
While betting has become easier — and arguably fun — the cost of these apps is much higher than the money that is won and lost on them.
Today’s guest is Jonathan D. Cohen, author of Losing Big: America’s Reckless Bet on Sports Gambling. He and Sean discuss the rise of sports betting, why the industry targets young men in their advertising, the social costs of frictionless sports gambling, and how the industry could be improved.
50% of men have a sports betting app on their phone, 70% of people who live on university campuses now gamble. I hate the Burger Reich I hate the Burger Reich

It feels like the same thing with the lottery except being a tax on the poorly educated, it is a tax on the stupid.
I’m OK with this.
Gambling is addictive. Do you think only ”stupid” people get addicted?

Yeah the nonstop advertisements for FanDuel and DraftKings really scream “DO NOT GAMBLE.”
The video game industry normalizing gambling in video games marketed at children is meant to serve as a warning if you really think about it. For sure.

How do you not see the A to B here?

“I’m too smart to get addicted” buddy you have absolutely no clue how the mind works
He’s like that guy who went on Joe Rogan and said he’s getting himself addicted to meth to prove how easy it is for strong minded men to quit
I remember once sitting on a slot machine, only put $10 in, I would just occasionally press the button for the minimum bet, I just wanted free drinks. At one point, I had some feature activate, and I won big for that bet, which was only about $5. That scared me, I saw how easily I could get addicted if I actually played seriously.

Yeah stupid people with gambling addiction should be poorer too. That’ll show em

It is not a thing about being stupid or not. People in economic difficulties will get their brains hijacked by the possibility of an easier way out of poverty.
It’s expĺoitation.
Normally i don’t think language like dumb or stupid should be policed for ableism but damn this is pretty ableist. I’d be OK with you pushed off a cliff
Ha, but you see, I noticed the capitalist coffin mongers at the bottom of the cliff and said “Not today” then chose to not stand at the edge
just curious, are you an anarchist?
Are you the anarchist police? Who gave you that uniform?
The lottery is about desperation mostly, at least the weekly drawings. I spent most of last year week night bartending and would make $25 a shift if i was lucky. At the point the $2 for a weekly Powerball ticket made no difference to my finances while offering some slim change of am escape.
It’s just flat tax on poor, you just think that cause “they have a choice™”, flawless inverted totalitarianism victory.
